Stephen King Is At It Again!

Our favorite spine chilling, master of horror author, Stephen King is at it again…and not in the same way as you’d think.

Stephen King, owner of the Bangor radio station, will be shaking things up on a new talk radio show. The show is said to feature a former Vice Presidential candidate and a former Maine Secretary of State’s Communications Director.

King stated that WZON 103.1 FM and 620 AM will be launching “The Pulse Morning Show” on Sept 12th, which will be airing every morning on weekdays and online at www.zoneradio.com. King is thrilled to see his station grow at a time where others are forced to cut their staff and decrease programming. He is excited to see what lies ahead.

“We’re going to try to be informative. We’re gonna be provocative. We’re going to be amusing, and we’re going to try to be a positive community force,” King said.

I have to admit, this doesn’t surprise me. I’m quite used to Stephen King’s audio books ruffling up a few feathers already, now he is doing it on the radio!

Spoilers Are A Good Thing?

I just finished reading an article about spoilers and I have an interesting insight I wanted to share. The article was about what makes a great experience when either listening to or reading a story, and if knowing the ending makes the experience better. I know for myself, one of my favourite parts of a good story is the ending, (I’m sure there are others that agree). I go through great lengths to make sure I don’t overhear the ending, or read a review accidently. However, when the unfortunate event occurs and I end up overhearing the end before I get there, I can’t help but feel my experience has undoubtedly been spoiled.

But has the experience truly been spoiled? According to the latest research published in the Journal of Psychological Science, it shows that “knowing the ending of a story before you read it doesn’t hurt the experience of the story. It actually makes you enjoy the story more.” This is what the article coined as the “Spoiler Paradox”.

Enjoy it more? How does that make any sense?

Easy. Storytelling fulfills a basic human function. Stories are an important tool to help us understand human behaviors and to communicate our understanding to others. We have the ability to attribute thoughts, desires, motivations and intentions of others, and we use this to predict and explain actions and behaviors of others in stories. That’s why it’s argued a “spoiled” story, that we know the ending to beforehand, is more engaging than stories that leave us hanging. Spoiled stories are also easier to follow and understand because we know what is to come. When you don’t know the ending to a story, you might find yourself paying attention to details that may not even be relevant.

So, with all this said and done, which side do you find yourselves on? After all, a spoiler may not be a spoiler, just a great way to simplify a complex story, who wouldn’t want that!

James Patterson Earns More Than You Can Imagine!

It’s no surprise, but the American author James Patterson has topped the Forbes magazine list for the world’s highest paid authors for the second year in a row. From May 2010 to April 2011, he has earned a whopping $84 million US. I wonder what he does with it all.

Apparently, he has made twice as much as his nearest competitor, Danielle Steel. Now that is crazy. Steel “only” earned $35 million with bestsellers such as Family Ties and 44 Charles Street.

Stephen King ended up in third place, earning $28 million US. Of course there were others who topped the list, I figured by mentioning the top 3 you’d understand how much more Mr. Patterson has earned, more than doubling his competitors earnings.

But we can’t say that Patterson doesn’t work for it. In 2009, he signed a 17-book deal with his publisher Hachette Book Group. With his release of 10 books this past year he has branched out into other lucrative markets, such as young adult and teen books.

Among the top 10 on the Forbes list were other authors who wrote for young adults, like Stephenie Meyer, Rick Riodran and Jeff Kinney.

As a fan of James Patterson’s murder mysteries, I can’t say I’m surprised. I haven’t listened to an audio book by James Patterson that I haven’t liked. Keep them coming Patterson, and we’ll keep you on the Forbes top 10 list!

Need A Break From Life? Listen to Marley & Me

The other night I was cleaning my new house, continuing to purge old things, vacuuming, dusting, all the typical household chores. Everything was going fine, until the 15 pound dog that belongs to our tenant came scurrying into the living room with a big stick in his mouth after I had just mopped. Needless to say, there were wood shavings everywhere on my nicely cleaned floor. Although, it upset me, what came next was icing on the cake. I had gone to find our tenant to take the dog outside, but when we returned, the dog had left us a little present, with a not so pleasing aroma.

I put my hands to my face and replicated the Home Alone scream. As I went dashing upstairs to find some more cleaner for this particular mess, I realized it reminded me of an audio book I had heard a few years back, Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog. Marley may have been a cute wriggle yellow furball of a puppy, but life is never what it seems. And Daisy, the dog I’m referring to, reminded me of Marley.

Marley & Me by John Grogan was going to be the perfect antidote. So I downloaded the audio book, laid down on the couch, ignored the barking going on around me, and fell deep into the world of John and Jenny and their dog Marley. I reevaluated my environment and thought if Marley was a symbol of devotion, this entire story was based on one concept, unconditional love. It made me realize how lucky I am to have a dog as loyal as Daisy in my life even if she does drive me crazy. I also needed a good laugh. So, if anyone needs a break, Marley & Me is the perfect audio book to listen to when everything around you is quite literally out of control.

The Lincoln Lawyer, To Watch The Movie Or Not To Watch It?

Welcome to the audiobooks.com blog! I’m Allie and I’m super excited to be a part of this blog. It’s important for me to understand what you would like to read, be informed about etc. Any feedback would be appreciated as I babble on about things I love and hope you enjoy too.

So I just finished listening to The Lincoln Lawyer and I’m thinking about seeing the movie this weekend. Before I question whether or not I should watch the movie, I need to get something off my chest. This audio book was a lot more dramatic and gripping than I had anticipated. I usually stick to listening to light fun audio books during my commutes because I don’t want to become an emotional wreck in my car, but the smart, savvy and sinister character, Mick Haller made me change my mind. It definitely was a treat to the ears, not only because it kept me engaged from start to finish, but it created a portrait of how to work the legal system with cynical lawyers cutting deals,
haggard cops, and cons holding back secrets that could change everything.

Without giving too much away, one of my favorite things about Mick Haller is the fact that he’s rationalized the lack of a need for an office, since he is always in, or on his way to, court. He literally works from the back seat of his car.

If you’re a fan of Michael Connelly already, I highly believe this will make your top three Connelly favorites.

Now, to watch the movie or not? Has anyone read the book and watched the movie? If so, did the film disappoint or were you happily entertained?
