Summary
THE BOOK BEHIND THE SECOND SEASON OF GAME OF THRONES, AN ORIGINAL SERIES NOW ON HBO.

In this sequel to A Game of Thrones, George Martin pursues the embattled Seven Kingdoms through a bitter 10-year winter in which good and evil contend for power. When cruel Queen Cerisi's son takes the Iron Throne following the death of its king, Robert Baratheon, the Queen's sons and Robert's brothers battle for control of the realm. Robert's young daughter, Princess Arya Stark, flees the kingdom disguised as a boy, as the exiled last heir of the former ruling family tends to his dragons. Meanwhile, the guardians of the realm's Wall dwindle in numbers as menacing barbarians gather their forces. Set in a glittering fantasy world enriched by 8,000 years of history, this baroque jewel captivates with its believable characters, deftly realized magic, and intricate plotting.

George R.R. Martin wrote a great story. And HBO's version of the book is very good, but the books are a little different, and Roy Dotrice does a very good job bring the story to life. Can't wait to get to the next book. Makes driving to and from work go by faster.

This is nothing short of a wonderful series. Each volume is so long one wonders that George R. R. Martin never lost sight of his nation of characters or their doings but he doesn't. And neither does Roy Dotrice, the book's reader! He (thankfully) is the voice behind all of the books and even has a part in season two on the HBO production. I have read and watched and heard books one and two. Long as they are, the tale still isn't flagging. If anything, it has picked up steam and I can't wait for the third book to be sent to me. The books being read to me are the best.

The story is great, Roy Dotrice (may he RIP) was a great narrator though he made a few mistakes with characters at times. But the only reason I’m giving this 4 stars is that the book has skips. It doesn’t matter what I do, I have listened to this book several times and not once has it not skipped. It’s the only one that consistently does this.

Wow, this needed an editor. The author spent too many pages with minutiae and then kill them off a paragraph later. There is some fun here, but it is too few. Oh, and the voice actor was awful. Everybody sounds like the same pirate. Wrong book for that.

Just a fantastic series. So expertly read and narrated. Just a great pleasure to listen to. I hated the show initially, my son started reading the books and loved them. I gave it a chance. So glad I did. The characters are so much richer in Martin's original story, the changes of perspective that are not possible in the show are so brilliantly used to allow us to empathize with even the most coarse characters. Now returning to the show, I enjoy it so much more.

It kept jumping and every now and then sounded like it was a worn out record on a poor record player

The voice of the narrator is soothing and adapts the characters very well. I don't like the way he pronounces Petyr Baelish

The book is brilliant. Characters are well-written and the plot keeps being interesting eventhough there is no Tolkien-scale epicness. The narrator is incredible and more importantly consistent in his performances.. the only bad thing is the audio... some parts are disturbed by strange rattle and sometimes it is the track breaks itself resulting in repeating a syllable for example.

I didn't think I would get into this series when I first started listening to it. It was slow to start and had audiobook reading had been assigned to me as part of rehabilitation. I was wrong. It did take a while to get into book 1, but when it was over I couldn't wait to get my hot little hands on book 2. Book 2 has ended - much to my chagrin. I have loved every minute with these characters, and Roy Dotrice is tremendously talented.

Great book, great narrator. My only complaint is this: the discs that were digitalized were scratched so there is a decent amount of skipping here and there. Nothing crazy, just a minor distraction. This is no fault of the author or the narrator so I don't feel it fair to give a lesser rating because of it.

Profile Avatar
Gary Luckett

A bit slow on the take off but it's only because there are so many characters and it's tough to follow the family dynamics, heritage and alliances. Once you finally get this under your belt than you quickly come to appreciate the strategies that each House uses to try and overthrow and conquer.

Profile Avatar

The book is fantastic! The narrator is a little slow and some of his impersonations are borderline annoying. His pronunciations of some of the characters are quite comical, i.e. Brienne. Other than that, it was very enjoyable, I would recommend to anybody that wants to read the ASOIAF series but is too busy to actually read the books.

Profile Avatar

Really into this series, the books are so well written and I'm totally addicted! The narrator does an amazing job of all the characters. Only downside to this book is that it often skips which is slightly annoying but other than that I give it 5 stars!

George RR Martin is a master storyteller! I love all of the details he adds, everything from the apparel to the courses at the feasts. I have also been watching the series on HBO, so I am curious to see where the novels and the series diverge. Definitely a worthwhile listen! I have an hour commute to and from work and the time flew by while listening . The narrator does a superb job in seamlessly switching from character to character. Two thumbs up!

The quality, depth of character & engagement of this fantasy world you would expect from this 'Game of Thrones' series. If you have watched the HBO television series, it is still well worth reading. The character development is understandably much better in the books, but it is also very interesting to read the nuances of differences between the two (books & television). Can't wait to get the next book!

If you are as obsessed with the series as I am this is a perfect way to get your fix until season 6 comes out in April 2016!! I love the narration and GRRM is an amazing writer. To think he was able to create this world and all the characters; it's truly mind boggling! I really cannot wait for the 6th book to come out! Since all the books are about 1000 pages it's great to be able to listen to it being read. I definitely recommend this series and the audio books!!

An amazing followup to a fantastic book. ACOK is busy setting the stage for the rest of the series, but does it in a way that is never heavy with exposition or boring with lack of action. This is one of my favorite books in the entire series and is a good summer read. The narrator is great with clarity and enunciation but is somewhat monotone and has some interesting pronounciations of some of the characters' names. Overall, definitely a good narrator that keeps you interested in the story. One annoying thing is that you are not able to skip to a certain chapter. If you are reading the book at the same time as the audiobook, you have to sort of guesstimate what hour you left off at in the book. It would be nice, especially with such a long book, to start listening from a specific chapter.

I started audio books with this series and Roy Dotrice narrating. And let me be the first to say I could not have had a better easing into audiobooks than this. Always an avid reader, I have wanted to read at times when it is not feasible and was quite dismayed until I tried this option. I was not disappointed. First the narrator, because without a good narration a book can be as bland as stereo instructions. Roy Dotrice is an amazing vocalist in his right. He assigns a voice and a style to each character and brings the story alive as he reads. You get much more than you bargain for! Anything by this narrator is sure to be a treat! This book was not quite as memorable for me as the first book or had as much impact as the third book in the series, but that may be because I have waited to rate these books. It may not be memorable, but it was just as easy and exciting to follow as the rest. Absolutely necessary to follow the story...this is really not a series you can pick up without having started from the beginning. The story continues here and the end has an amazing turnout that will surely upset you emotionally. Things seem to cruise along in this book until the very end and the world turns upside down. I suggest you dont get too comfortable...but no warning will prepare you for the twists this book takes.
