Summary
Discover or return to the dystopian series that's captured the hearts of millions of teen and adult readers! This first in Veronica Roth's #1 New York Times bestselling Divergent series of books is the novel the inspired the major motion picture starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, and Kate Winslet.

Perfect for fans of the Hunger Games and Maze Runner series, Divergent and its sequels, Insurgent and Allegiant, are the gripping story of a dystopian world transformed by courage, self-sacrifice, and love. Fans of the Divergent movie will find the book packed with just as much emotional depth and exhilarating action as the film, all told in beautiful, rich language.

One choice can transform you. Beatrice Prior's society is divided into five factions—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). Beatrice must choose between staying with her Abnegation family and transferring factions.

Her choice will shock her community and herself. But the newly christened Tris also has a secret, one she's determined to keep hidden, because in this world, what makes you different makes you dangerous.

And don't miss The Fates Divide, Veronica Roth's powerful sequel to the bestselling Carve the Mark!

I really enjoyed this book. I did not read it until after i had watched the movie. This is a fun read, but the narration is awesome. Emma Galvin is one of the best narrators i have heard. I have listened to several other books she read. She uses such good inflection and knows when to pause and how to ACTUALLY read a book. EXCELLENCE!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this novel. Even though I was completely lost at the beginning, I was soon pulled in by the characters and the story line. I found myself looking forward to time in the car because it would allow me to listen to the story of Trice and Four as it unfolded.

really good plot but was a bit difficult to get past the teen sexual drama. just a little tedious but not a deal breaker very cool concept and look into human emotion/personalities

The actual writing itself is mediocre. The lady reading is way too monotone. Ill rate this overall 2 stars..

LOVE THE BOOK, LOVE THE SERIES! I trully am hooked on this series Im not sure what I'll do once I've finished! The emotion between Tobias and Tris is electrifying. So much emotion, passion and bravery. The narrator is perfect for Tris character. This second book has me on the edge of my seat

I normally listen to books for my hour commute every day. With this one, I couldn't put it down. I would listen while getting ready for work and right before I went to bed. I love the concept. Emma Galvin was perfect for the narration. She was awesome.

It's a very interesting concept that society's ills were caused by the five groups of people: the dishonest, the selfish, the cowardly, those that stir up trouble and the stupid. These are well known no-no's in Scripture. However setting up a society based on strict factions of the opposite of these problems also seems to have its problems, including creating a caste of the factionless who have no status. The book had a good mix of characters to root for and despise. It ran at a good pace and was over before I knew it. I look forward to reading the sequel.

Great "read" Sometimes the narration voice just doesn't work with the story, some people seem to have to drastically change their voice to the point that it can be distracting. Emma Galvin has a nice balance. I too am not a teen. However, I enjoy Young Adult Sci-Fi.

The book sits well with the hunger games genre, yet it feels a bit heavy handed. Perhaps it just caters to a younger audience. The narrator is good, the three stars are not meant as an insult, it's just an average reading that does not add or detract from the book

I wanted to read this after hearing it was in the same genre as the hunger games. Touching on social order, governments, the lack of free will, anld classics like 1984/Brave New world. It did have several good concepts, but a bit more "for kids" though I did still enjoy it,I did see the movie way after listening& they are very different. But it was a good light read for the summer.

I have to say that the Narration is deserving of more than 5 stars. Sometimes the narration voice just doesn't work with the story, some people seem to have to drastically change their voice to the point that it can be distracting. Emma Galvin has a nice balance. I too am not a teen. However, I enjoy Young Adult Sci-Fi. always have. (I am not even in my 20's)

Pretty thrilling for the most part. We really get immersed in this world, and the events that transpire. If you like action and especially if you can appreciate a warrior's perspective, you'll find this book extremely exciting. The romantic side of it was also something that held my interest. I think the story falls apart near the end, becoming a bit too far-fetched, and this really continues into the next book...so much so that I'm not at all interested in the third. But the first is pretty entertaining. Some of the problems: I find it hard to believe that in the not-too-distant future, almost everyone has one personality trait. Humans are much more complex than this. It would take some serious inbreeding to create these factions, which would result in a slew of other genetic problems. Also, the simulation serums don't seem to have a realistic scientific basis. It's not really great sci-fi, but a fun teenage action story. But all in all, it was fun if you don't think about it to deeply.

The book was fantastic enough for me to want to listen to it after I had already read it. I couldn't put the book down and didn't want to hit pause getting out of my car. The narrators voice seemed spot on to what I envisioned Tris's voice to be like not young or high pitched but low and serious. Perfect match!!! Great series!!!

This is a great book, if you are a fan of the Hunger games you will love this series. It gets just a little predictable in book two. but still grate. Can't wait to see the movie.

Profile Avatar

Entertaining, as long as you don't think to long/hard on the obvious plot problems. Then there's that tricky issue of the romance between an adult & a child that would ultimately land 4/Tobias in jail if it happened in the real world.

Good book. Love the strong female character although her indifference frustrates me at times. I like that the book didn't get bogged down with sappy, cloying infatuations; it is there but tastefully incorporated. Exciting plot and keeps you guessing where it will lead. I was left anticipating the next book.
