The book itself is amazing. I was a fan of the show before the book and they go together very well. But the narrator makes the book so much better. She switches from English to Scottish accents for respective characters. Really enjoyed listening to her and the book!

Fantastic story, both interesting from a historical perspective and great character development. I really felt I got to know the characters, and "miss" them now. Very realistic, and interesting relationship dynamics. A bit too much into the bedroom details now and then, these parts got fast forwarded without missing too much. Narrator was fantastic, very good accents, and many different voices for all the characters. Both my husband and I enjoyed picked this as our favorite audio book series so far.

I first heard about this book from my sister, who had heard about it from her husbands cousin way up in northern Canada. I was very skeptical when she told me this was the best book she had ever read. She explained a little bit about the book to me, and I thought to myself.... no way am I going to be able to get through this book. It just didn't seem like a book I'd read. Boy was I wrong. Its full of adventure, romance, sadness, everything you would ever want out of a book. Now I'm on my 4th time reading the series while I wait for book 8 to come out.

Started a few times before I could get into it. Once I got past through the first few chapters, it got good and I will probably read the whole series now. I am already on the second book. The only criticism that I have is that the author could've better conveyed a sense of love and intimacy in other ways except detailed sex. To me, the multiple sex scenes were actually a distraction away from the intent to convey strong love and connection. The narration was good. Easy to follow the characters via the narrator's skilled ability to switch between English and Scottish accents. Only (minor) criticism regarding narration is that it sometimes sounded teasing/happy when the passage read didn't seem to fit the situation. Overall, I would highly recommend this audiobook.

Amazing story. I love all the historical references and the medical knowledge she brings with her to this new time and place. I also love the narrators story telling especially the changes in the voices.

LOVE this!! Finished in just a couple days and starting book 2 now. Was one of my grandmothers favorites so I wanted to read it. (Ending is sexual and violent.. a little disturbing. I don’t think it needed to be so explicit to be a part of the story line. Beware!)

4.25? Audiobook? One of my [many] New Year’s resolutions was to get through Outlander if it killed me and for a while, I thought it might. I must’ve restarted this audiobook at least three times in the past 18 months and it still took watching the television adaptation to solidify its contents in my mind. For nearly the first third of the audiobook, I felt like an unenthused spectator at a sporting event with a roaring crowd. There is so much praise for this series, but I was initially underwhelmed. However, after hour five and encouraging words from someone whose opinion I trust, I’ve began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. My interest in Outlander really began to shoot upward once I started using the television adaptation as a supplemental tool. The excruciatingly slow nature of this story caused me to glaze over countless important details while listening to the audiobook. Speeding up the narration helped quite a bit, but not as much as following along with the television show. I was actually very impressed with the book-to-screen adaptation. Most of the characters’ lines seemed to be pulled directly from Gabaldon’s work. By hour 10, I knew I was interested enough in the story to finish the rest of this installment, but I was still unsure about continuing on with the series. There were numerous aspects of the plot that troubled me and I constantly had to adjust my mindset from that of a 21st-century feminist to accommodate the historically accurate, yet disturbing, actions of 18th-century Scottish culture. Fortunately, I was able to do so, but I absolutely do not recommend this story to anyone sensitive to any type of abuse (sexual, physical, psychological, you name it- it’s all in Outlander). My main reservation with both finishing this installment and continuing with the rest of the series was length. Eight installments and this is the shortest one at 32 hours (not counting the many novellas). Not only would that eat up my audiobook credits, but it would put me seriously behind with my reading challenge. The pace of this novel is far too slow for it to be this long. Gabaldon’s writing may be beautifully detailed, but even my patience has a limit. Hence, my number one reason for detracting almost an entire star is that this novel is just too damn long. I feel that this story could have been told just as well in 20-25 hours and even a small consolidation of plot points would have gone a long way toward securing my attention and interest. With that said, I’ve heard from several sources that this series gets better as it goes along and as I already own the next installment, I will doubtless be giving it a shot at some point. Most likely after I zip through a few smaller (aka normal-sized) novels to ensure that hearing a 50-hour audiobook doesn’t hinder my reading challenge progress. I’d also like to become up-to-speed on the television series so it matches my reading progress thus far. If you are thinking of undertaking the Outlander series, I encourage you to follow along with the show. Doing so greatly enhanced my understanding and overall experience with the novel. This is a very different type of time travel adventure from those I have read in the past. The time travel enigma definitely takes a backseat in Outlander, which is probably why it isn’t primarily seen as a science fiction novel. It more strongly resembles a historical fiction novel, possibly akin into something written by Philippa Gregory in regards to historical accuracy and immersion. Kudos to Gabaldon for the obvious amount of painstaking research done to ensure historical accuracy. Outlander‘s setting is positively consuming and fosters the sense of cultural immersion I am so fond of in historical fiction. Narration review: Davina Porter is a widely-admired narrator. After spending more than 32 hours with her, I can see why. The vocal distinction she provided was top-notch. Indeed, her Scottish brogue was so convincing but I found myself frequently straining to understand it. Like with all accents, it became easier to understand with time, but just barely. As the next installment is partially set in France, I’m very excited to hear Porter’s French accent. I’m sure it will be delightful. One aspect of this audiobook that I was slightly disappointed in was the quality of production. There was a faint, but constant sound of white noise present in the background throughout the entire 32 hours. I realize this audiobook was produced in 2006, so that may be why, but I hope subsequent installments don’t have this issue. It wasn’t a major concern, but still slightly annoying, especially because I had to listen very closely when a Scottish character spoke. ??

Awesome book. Great narrator! Diana Gabaldon is one of my favorite authors and listening to outlander helped a very long road trip go quickly!

it was a very delicate way of telling someones tribulation and triumph in rebellion the narrator could do a little better she start a little weak but then it got better I love this book

I love, love, love historical fiction and this took it to a whole new level. Started out a bit slow, but when Claire "landed" in Scotland, I was hooked. With the accents and pronunciations of places/names, I'm SO glad I listened to this book! The narrator did an excellent job. Turned out to be a bit more graphic and gory than I expected, but well worth it!

I don't remember reading or listening to a better story. I loved it. The story line, character developement and scene setting is nothing short of phenominal, and the narator did a fantastic job. I HIGHLY recommend this book and I will rent it again. No, I think I'll buy my own copy.

Even though this book seemed to go on forever, the author excelled at creating in-depth characters. I felt like I was there each step of the way. Sometimes the situations felt redundant and could have been left to just one occurrence. I don't think the abridged version could truly capture the characters as well. However, my all-time favorite time travel book was The Time Traveler's Wife.

Amazing book and narrator! She brings the characters to life. Only issue was audio quality/ volume. And the addition off the “here ends disk 1” addition which was a touch outdated for the platform but all is understandable at the age of this book’s original release. SPOILER ALERT! WAY too much detail on Jamie’s torture and homosexual rape. Unsatisfying ending; kind of blah. It felt like some loose ends weren’t tied up (e.g., what happened as a result of the changes in the timeline?) Fantastic narrator.

This novel starts very slow several chapters, However, Please stick with it because it will be a very amazingly wonderful story. Know that it is one of several books so abrupt endings happen throughout the series, which immediately continues in the next book. The narrator reads slowly for my tastes, but this can be adjusted in the speed up section. Well worth the hours.

Profile Avatar

Good book but it made me want to slap Claire sometimes due to her high handedness and putting others in danger. I am not sure if I would feel differently reading it as tone is a lot. Jamie, on the other hand, impressed. Yep…I would totally be willing (and excited) to have a Jamie for my partner or spouse. FYI There is a LOT of sex in the book…

Lives up to the hype. Exciting well-written time travelly adventure story. The narrator is really good, does a good job with the different accents. But the violence especially sexual violence was too much for me and I wasn't expecting it. It's probably artistically justified since it makes you really hate the characters doing it, but ... it's just kind of horrible to listen to. still not sure if I'm going to read the next one

I started watching the Outlander series and binged several seasons quite fast! I found myself enthralled w the the storyline of that time period /history, the mystical undertones w time travel and the epic love story b/w Jamie and Claire. I decided to give the books a go and I am so glad I did! The show producers did an excellent job bringing the author’s words to the screen. I will say the author gives excellent, vivid and yet LONG descriptions of people, places, actions and feelings. I did speed up to around 1.2 so that helped. The narrator’s amazing ability to shift from Scottish accents to to even French is quite amazing! I’m ready to start the next one! What a mesmerizing idea... a love that transcends time and space. I love the historical references. The love scenes are a quite detailed but she’s trying to show how connected they are and how true lovers want to not only please the other, but also consume the other. Does a modern day Jamie exist ? Haha. Jk. I’m happily married;)

I didn't know this was a book series until I saw the tv series. I am almost finished with the first book and can't wait to get to the second book. I love the character development, the relationships, the action scenes are all very well written. I love the historical content is really accurate. I think it would be helpful to have a dictionary of Galic words translated into English words. It took me a while to understand the "ken" means to know or some proximity to that. Once you begin to understand this, the story is less confusing. I love the narrator. The different voices are really good.

Profile Avatar

I feel this is a well written and well read book although for me it seemed like a much longer read then the story was able to justify. I enjoyed the characters and I liked the idea of a character from the 20th century coming to terms with life in the 18th century. Unfortunately I didn't get the sense of culture clash that I was expecting as the story unfolded. Furthermore, acceptance of this phenomenon on the part of the main characters seemed to come a little too quickly and easily for my liking. For anyone who enjoys books based on the relationships between believable characters without too much emphasis on a strong story could do a lot worse than give this book a try.

Great book that keeps your attention through every page. An amazing love story that isn't a typical romance novel. I will admit that at first i despised this book as my girlfriend and grandmother both read it, but fast-forward less than a year and I am now on book 5 of this series! This whole series takes the cake, scratch that, it takes the entire bakery of adventure, romance, family matters, human emotions. A tale of love and loss and excitement. All of that being said, the books can all be slow at times. It usually switches off, slow, fast, slow, fast, often in a four part split of the pace. The characters are all easily loved or hated and equally deserve to be in their own ways. In my twenty years of living, i have never found a book so enthralling that I would recommend it to anyone that'll listen. Do yourself a favor and read or listen to at least this first book in particular. (P.S. Davina Porter is a fantastic narrator and deserves every bit of praise award her from it)

I loved this story so much I listened to it twice. The characters came alive by the way the narrator read the story. I just recently visited Scotland and I wished I had listened to this before hand. Now I want to go back and visit more of the historical sites with some extra meaning. Diana Gabaldon has a very unique descriptive style of writing which makes each character loved or hated. I can't say enough about this book and recommend it to anyone who loves history combined with romance.

This is such a fantastic and wonderfully written book. When I first got the book as a gift from my boyfriend I was contemplating reading it because it's such an elaborate saga. I am so glad that I took the chance and went with curiosity. I can't put this book down. It is filled with rich details and has a way of making you feel as if you were there living in flesh and blood every scenario. I highly recommend for anyone who loves history and great heroines, who stand up for themselves and for those they love.

The writing was very interesting and the history was week researched. Kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened. The ending was satisfying but felt very rushed. That is the reason for the lowered star grade. When the book is already so long, why rush the ending? Other than that, I really enjoyed it. The narration was pretty flawless. There were a few times I felt I could hear ambient noise in the recording, but that didn't bother me at all. I enjoyed it. May not go into the rest of the series, but this was a very nice novel and a solid work of historical fiction.

There is lots to love here! Claire's struggles both internal and external ring very true to life as you are swept along on her adventures. Incredible descriptions of time, setting and characters will suck you in and plant you so firmly into her world that you will not want to come back to your own.

Oh I can't believe how much I loved this book! I had downloaded it to my phone to listen to while traveling cross country. i'd never heard of the book but was drawn in by the excellent review- and that it was 32 hours long. Figured that would keep me busy for my long trip. During my travels my phone went in the water and died completely- a small tragedy, but nothing compared to the despair i felt about not being able to continue listening! Forget retrieving important info saved in my phone- no my first order of business was to re-download this book! When I wasn't listening I was thinking about the characters and "missing" them. Truly drew me in. I was madly in love with Jamie and wishing him for myself long before Claire acquiesced. Which-along those lines- did not like AT ALL the graphic description of Jamie's experience at the hands of his captor, but it was sufficiently resolved IMO and didn't effect my overall rating of the book.

Fabulous tale melding history, science fiction, romance, and suspense. Though very well written, it's narrator Davina Porter's performance and interpretation of Scots, English, and French accents that makes this audiobook a must-read. I blew through some 38 hours in just 10 days, and I'm eager to dive into the second book in the series, A Dragonfly in Amber.

What a beautifully written book. I felt as if I were wondering the grassy fields and rocky landscape of Scotland right along with Claire. I could almost feel the rain, breezes and the warmth of the sunshine. Even the smells of all the flora and fauna were incredibly vivid. How rare is that in a story? I found myself heartbroken every time Claire thought about pursuing her return to 1945; yet elated by so many other pleasantries and excursions within the tale. What an incredible escape from the pressures of today.

Not for everyone, but for those of us who enjoy learning history, reading romance, and the English language well written this was escape reading/listening at its finest. Appreciated listening as it would've taken me much longer to reach the conclusion. Now I'm on to the next saga.

Many evenings, I would pull into my driveway and sit there to get to a place where I could bear to turn off the CD deck and leave Claire and Jamie behind. I have the entire series in queue and eagerly await the arrival of Dragonfly in Amber.

A beautifully written story told against the backdrop of post war Great Britain and 18th century Scotland, itself on the brink of the second Jacobite Rising. While on a second honeymoon following the end of WWII, Claire Randall 'falls through time' while picking flowers near a circle of standing stones. Finding herself suddenly and inexplicably thrust into a time and place completely foreign to her, she must rely on her extraordinary intelligence, wits, a lot of luck, and an unlikely friend she finds in Jamie Fraser. A Highland Scot, who also happens to be an outlaw and wanted for various crimes by a sadistic Captain of Dragoons, one Black Jack Randall, who also happens to be her husbands several times great grandfather. Don't let the time travel element through you off, DG's writing is so brilliant that not only does it make perfect sense, you also experience both time periods as though you are truly there, you can hear the sounds, smell the scents (well almost, and thankfully because many are quite unpleasant indeed), see the people and scenery, and best of all, you experience the range of Claire's emotions, despair, joy, heartbreak, anger, and best of all, an utter and complete love that fills you so entirely you could almost burst. I cannot say enough great things about this book. Find a copy, open it to any page, read 10 pages and I guarantee you will be a fan for life...and that's great because there are 7 more books out now, and there will be at least one more! Read. This. Book.

This audiobook is like an old friend. When I hear Porters voice as Claire and Jaimie... I get caught up in their saga. No matter the chapter I start listening at, the characters are brought to life with the combination of Porter's narration and Gabaldon's uncanny story telling ability.

"Outlander" is an outlandish synthesis of two genres: Harlequin romance-type pulp and historical fiction. The plot plodded along at a sleep-inducing pace; the romance scenes were laughable; and the fight sequences wallowed in unnecessarily sadistic violence. Couldn't the publishing company afford a decent editor for this embarassing tome? The only positive thing about this audio book was the delightful Scottish accents provided by the narrator.

Boring...went no where fast. Third CD in, I wrapped it up and sent it back and cancelled book two. Don't waste your time. Normally, I HAVE to finish what I start...I just couldn't with this one.

Even though I normally cringe when someone recommends a romance novel to me, I think that this audiobook is one of the best I have ever listened to. The narrator does a great job with the accents and handling both male and female characters. I am so glad that I stumbled across this story and I can't wait to hear the next story in the series.

I was captivated and pleasantly surprised. Gabaldon created a fanciful storyline that is filled with incredible descriptions, attention to detail, and authentic verbige that surround you like a warm coat. The reader can identify with Claire and her internal conflict; her struggle to get back home, and her need to remain. Truly a great find and I can't wait to read the other five books in this series.

Absolutely love this book-the characters are written in such a way that makes you care about them-this is the first half of the book (I'm listening to the second half now)and waiting for the second half was very difficult! This book moved me to tears-the narration is wonderful-Davina Porter's voice is lovely-great accents! Highly recommended!

This is a really well written book that just happens to probably also fall into the romance category, but definitely not your run of the mill romance. The narrator is great. Her Scottish accent for the men just makes you grin. I think she had a lot of fun. So did I! Too long? Definitely not. Could've gone on another 15 CDs with quality writing and action like this.

Hey, I'm a guy and not supposed to like "romance novels". But I have to say this book has it all! I'm always hooked on anything that has to do with time travel because of the endless possibilities the author has to work with. This is my second time through this series of books by Diana Gabaldon and my hat is off to her. My only complaint (and it's a big one) is that this is the only book in the series that is carried in the unabridged version. The abridged versions really suffer in comparison. Love the series!!

Wow, I discovered these stories in my local library when I rented A Breath of Snow and Ashes which is a long way into the story. I never felt like I was lost picking it up so late. But I knew I had to go back and read the others. When I discovered the unabridged version of the first book it was a hallejeh moment. I thought when I first realized there was time travel involved that I had picked up a very weird book. But I don't give up on a book until the third disc if it is a long book. By the end of the second I was hooked. Going back to the first book I knew some of the events that were going to happen but it didn't lesson the anticipation for me. And Jamie is a man's man and a woman's dream. For days afterward I hear their voices in my head. They are like your favorite family members who tell just wonderful stories.

I decided to order her books because I saw they were award winners. I didn't realize my mother and father had been listening to/reading them as well. When I told them what I had added to my queue, they both began singing the praises of this entire series. I do not read romance novels, but these are extremely well-written historical fiction novels with aspects of fantasy and some romance. Frankly, I roll my eyes at the romance parts, but the rest of the book is incredibly engaging. Diana Gabaldon has a great sense of humor, the narrator is really good, the stories are great. I highly recommend these books to anyone -- except mixed-company car-poolers! ;-)

Maybe it was just the story being broken up in to 4 to 5 disc shipments at a time that it just didn't flow. Maybe if you had all 25 (!!) at one time you could maintain interest. The story was fairly interesting and the reader quite good.

I have to admit that to start this audio was very discouraging. I found the reader hard to follow and I really couldn't figure out what was going on. This was going to be one of those "send it back right away" books. After getting through disc 1, it had captured my attention and I really looked forward to every package I received. I am now so hooked on these books, that I can't wait for any more in the series to come.
