Summary
A delightfully dishy novel about the all-time most impossible boss in the history of impossible bosses.

Andrea Sachs, a small-town girl fresh out of college, lands the job “a million girls would die for.” Hired as the assistant to Miranda Priestly, the high-profile, fabulously successful editor of Runway magazine, Andrea finds herself in an office that shouts Prada! Armani! Versace! at every turn, a world populated by impossibly thin, heart-wrenchingly stylish women and beautiful men clad in fine-ribbed turtlenecks and tight leather pants that show off their lifelong dedication to the gym. With breathtaking ease, Miranda can turn each and every one of these hip sophisticates into a scared, whimpering child.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA gives a rich and hilarious new meaning to complaints about “The Boss from Hell.” Narrated in Andrea’s smart, refreshingly disarming voice, it traces a deep, dark, devilish view of life at the top only hinted at in gossip columns and over Cosmopolitans at the trendiest cocktail parties. From sending the latest, not-yet-in-stores Harry Potter to Miranda’s children in Paris by private jet, to locating an unnamed antique store where Miranda had at some point admired a vintage dresser, to serving lattes to Miranda at precisely the piping hot temperature she prefers, Andrea is sorely tested each and every day—and often late into the night with orders barked over the phone. She puts up with it all by keeping her eyes on the prize: a recommendation from Miranda that will get Andrea a top job at any magazine of her choosing. As things escalate from the merely unacceptable to the downright outrageous, however, Andrea begins to realize that the job a million girls would die for may just kill her. And even if she survives, she has to decide whether or not the job is worth the price of her soul.

Way better than the movie. Loved it.

I understand that this is an old book but this should be re-recorded. The quality of the audio is not at par with the new books and the narration couldve been improved

Book is way better than the movie. Don't know why the other reviewer says the movie is better, but she's crazy nuts! Narrator is outstanding as well!

Another rare case when the movie is better than the book... It was a good book, the narrator was nice. Really hated Miranda from the very beginning!

This book is definetly different from the movie, which I liked... The only big problem that I had with it was the narrator. She sounded really dull and monotonous and was putting me to sleep. However, once I got past her narration I was able to enjoy the story... Also, the ending could have been better... I liked the movie ending tons better...

Saw the movie first, maybe influenced how i felt about the book but I was expecting more excitement from the book, both in context and in the narrator's voice that I didn't get. Liked the storyline overall, just didn't have enough umph for me.

This book was okay, much better than the movie. I think it would have been better with a more exciting narrator!

I couldn't quit listening to this book. The characters and situations are so realistic. I think this one is more a memoir than fiction. I do recommend it.

Really enjoyed this book - it was funny & gave a great insight into the shallow world of high fashion. Good escape from one's everyday life in small cities not consumed with the latest Prada outfit or next haute fashion party. Hilliarious.

This book was ok. The readers voice was very monotone. I watched the movie first. I must say the movie was 10 times better.

Very disappointing! I thought it was to be funny & I saw nothing funny about the poor girl who had to put up with all of that. Waste of time. find something else.

Disappointed in the reading, all of the characters had the same bored, monotone voice.

In this book, many derogatory remarks about individuals with low incomes and high incomes. Really, no balance for positive remarks is able with the inferiority between the classes. I am a business student; I was not satisfied with how either the protagonist or the antagonist acted within the book. Truly, women are not slaves for $32,000 a year or for the ability of progression to a better job. No person is a master of another individual in how Miranda continued daily to antagonize Andrea. However, Miranda worked for her position but needs to keep herself in prospective. Truly, the situation relayed in the contents of the book happens on a daily basis with many organizations. The facts are based on low paying wages almost enslave the employee just like Andrea. I had to wonder with the signification of the author having the name Miranda with "m" as in manager. Otherwise, the book has everything true about today's society.

The book is definitely better than the movie. The narrator made it worth listening to. not the most believable storyline. Why would this inexperienced girl EVER be hired to do this job? And would anyone work for such a witch? I guess maybe there are some people out there hungry enough to do it. But all I kept thinking was "Why are you still working there?" No amount of money could make me run my personal life into the ground. I guess it was entertaining. But the movie was even more unbelievable.

I ABSOLUTELY loved this audio book !!!! So much so, that as soon as I got home, I wanted to rent the movie !! The Narator does a SUPURB job and I never laughed so hard !!! I watched the movie yesterday and there are a lot of differences between the Movie and the audio book; in fact, I enjoyed the audio book more, but both are very cute in the own right. I highly recommend this audio book.

The book, especially the audio book, was so much better than the movie although I didn't understand why the audio book was abridged. It's not like it a long literary novel that needed to be shorted. I enjoyed the narrator, who I thought did a good job bringing the characters to life, especially Miranda. I also found it funny that I read the book at the same time the movie was in the theaters, and shortly thereafter Jimmy Choo shoes were on all the store shelves. I wonder how much this book/movie had to do with bringing some of these designers into the mainstream. Overall I highly recommend this funny and amusing way of looking at the high world of fashion.

Not as good as I had hoped for. It was entertaining but seemed to strike a false note. I thought the movie was better.

I really enjoyed the book although I don't understand why Andrea's boyfriend and friend couldn't have been more understanding of her job. For the most part, I found the reading of the book to be annoying due to the reader's monotone voice - except when she read Miranda's lines. Overall, I would highly recommend this audiobook.

I held off watching the movie until I got the audio CD, and I am sure the movie will be exactly the same "quick" story as was the CD. I loved the book, the characters and the way in which the story was written is just great. I liked it so much that I wished it hadn't been "shortened!" Easy listening, great characters, very girly and empowering! I'd read it again, and will look for more from Weisberger.

Very enjoyable. But I kept noticing characters who'd appear and then never be heard from again (the tall fellow who says "Welcome to the Dollhouse" is notable). The abridgement is good. But when I'm enjoying a book, I want the whole thing.

A very enjoyable story. Not as "chick-lit" as I thought it would be and my husband even enjoyed it during a long car trip. The story will resonate with anyone who has sacrificed large parts of their personal life (and sleep) for a job or training. The reader/actor has a bit of a flat and annoying voice, but I stopped noticing that after about 30min.

This would have been much better if the reader was not so dull. I heard her read the title and author and my heart sunk with disappointment. Her voice was very monatone. The actual story, however, was fantastic! I loved her thoughts of sarcasm all through-out.

I loved it. I have not seen the movie and didn't know what to expect. It was better than that. I could relate to most every situation that "DEVIL" demanded. The book was entertaining and the reader was great. Good book !!!

Holy crap, I'm really a fool. If you've heard of a "Chick Flick", this was the literary equivalent. Somehow, after reading the reviews, I was expecting humor. Personally, I really don't much care for fashion. My tastes run more toward trucks, guns, and chicks. The book was, however, entertaining. Take my advice, don't let your hopes outweigh your common sense. Nezt, I 'm gonna get a western...gary

I expected so much more after the rave reviews that the motion picture received. The story was so-so, and actually got a little boring and repetitious. And I felt the reader had a very uninteresting delivery--somewhat monotone.

I always come to good fiction books late. I'm never one to rush to a work of fiction when it is on the best seller list, preferring non-fiction works. Usually what happens is the book winds up for rent on video/dvd before I wind up reading it. Such is the case for the Devil Wears Prada. I loved this book. It harkened to my mind character traits of bad bosses and teachers I have had over the years. Haven't we all had them. I was just never strong eough to tell them where to get off. I guess that's why welcome is still on my forhead turned doormat. Loved it!!!!!!!

This was a great read. It teaches you that your job isn't everything and neither is money. It is hysterical and Rachel Leigh Cook does a fantastic job with the accents. Highly recommend it!

Did not get a chance to see the movie, but I really enjoyed the book. I laughed hysterical and cheered for Andrea when she finally figure out life and what matters. The funny thing is that this is not to far from the truth about the fashion world.

Another tedious book about completely spoiled, shortsighted, narcisstic, indulgent rich people treating others like chattel or worse, mere unvalued possessions. if you want to pretend that you're the witchy editor with all her fabulous furs and faux friends, fine. For anyone who likes believeable storylines, this one will be lacking. The protagonist is too sweet and nice, the evil editor (even if she is based on the real devil of the publishing world, Anna Wintour) is far too evil, and the man with whom our heroine ends up too rich and kind to be believed. I hated it.

As the first line of the review says, this is just plain dishy! This book will not make you think differently about the world, or give you any deep insights, but it's a fun way to pass a few hours. At first, I thought the narrator was terrible, but actually her voice and narration was perfect for the book. If you want some light entertainment, then I recommend this book.

This book launched both my Simply Audiobooks debut and my new, NJ-style long and traffic-choked commute. It was fun, engaging, ridiculous, and while not often laugh-out-loud funny, kept a smile on my face. I enjoyed every minute, and it has me hooked on books on CD for the car. The reading was well done, and I really felt I could see the characters interacting with one another, and performing all of the nonsense required by Miranda Priestly. This book has been long recommended to me by a relative with a great deal of fashion sense, who thought it was quite funny. Yes, it is a bit fluffy, but will take your mind off the slow moving roads as you commute. I was sorry to hear it end, and wish it was not abridged, although I'm sure the best parts were included. Try it!

We listened to this on the way to a horse ranch last summer. My 16 year old daughter, twelve year old son, husband and I laughed and enjoyed the whole story.

More spoiled rich idiots dropping names, buying labels, spending furiously and treating everyone around them like chattel. If you can stand the complete lack of social skills and social consciousness among most of the characters, rent this. There are few likeable characters and those people mostly put up with situations that few people in real life would tolerate. Unbelieveable and unlikeable. This book is well-written in spite of the subject matter. The narration is fine and unobtrusive. But no one needs another book about self-centered, self-absorbed, NY prima donnas.... Take a pass.

I really enjoyed this book. It was hysterical. I thought the reader was perfect for the book. The reader sounded young just like Andrea. I definitely didn't want it to end and am looking forward to more by this author.

Cute book. Easy and humorous to listen to. I did not like the narrator---sounded to much like a librarian reading it---but thoroughly enjoyed the character. How easy to relate to to the Boss from Hell, and the "job of a lifetime" that consumes your life. You'll enjoy it.

First jobs are hard...especially for woman. Andrea's boss was merely a bitch, my first boss made hers look like a walk in the park. Right out of undergrad school, I landed my dream job. In fact, the best in my graduating class. It was with a major cola company. Like Andrea, I hated everyday. You need money, experience, and references from your first job. So, I stuck it out. When my name was next on the list to participate in the department head's infamous Menage a trois weekend, I quit. The best option at this point in my career was to go back to school and major in public relations. I never worked for "the man" again, instead starting my own company. Employees deserve to be valued. They contribute to making a successful product. Translation: Money, respect, security, and love of your work. Perhaps this book was funny, however, it reminded me how screwed up and venerable a twenty year old is in the job force.

The narrator managed to capture the main charector's sarcastic emotions without making her seem cruel and synical. Her voice was soothing and fit perfectly with the story. I really enjoyed this book. It was light, funny, and a page turner dispite the overall subject being work and a difficult boss! There were many times when I felt the author stole thoughts from me, especially about my experiences working at a PR firm. This was a wonderful and entertaining book!

After listening to this book, I felt ten times better about every boss I had ever had. The "devil" in this book is the dictionary definition of "crazy making". The fact that it is about a real person makes it all the more intriguing. Is it possible for an employer to be the source of all misery? Listen and find out-- I loved this book!

This is a mean spirited book, cruel really, but so funny, so appealingly written that it's hard to remember that Lauren Weisberger is a disloyal employee writing about a real person- Anna Wintour. Part of the entertainment value comes from a sense of comradery in rebelling against those cooler-than-thou New York fashion editors who tell us that whatever we just bought bores them now. It's a very entertaining revenge book.
