Summary
This little-known but engrossing Trollope novel, published in 1870, centers on a feisty small-town clergyman, his cantankerous neighbor, the miller, and the women in both their lives. A murder, a trial, a feud, a fallen woman, and a complicated romance are woven together in an exploration of the limits of our ability to truly do right when we involve ourselves in the lives of others, even with the best intentions. (Introduction by Angela Rowland)

I enjoyed this book but wonder whether this is because I am English and an older generation! Trollope develops a very simple story over many pages, with the familiar theme of who should marry who. However, he is also mischievous in his description of the Establishment and surprisingly, the novel is quite enjoyable and good light reading. One minor irritation was the mispronunciation of the names of English towns, in what was otherwise, a well narrated rendering of the book.

Very interesting and well-written book. Great characterisation. Well read by just one reader - for a pleasant change.
