This book is heart wrenching in many ways. The adults indulge themselves to the continual detriment of little Maise. Maise perseveres but maybe not without being somewhat warped. The reader must decide. The themes of the dysfunctional family and the impact of divorce on children are still relevant. And of course the book is beautifully written.
