Summary
From the day Caitlin vanishes the lives of her family members are irrevocably altered, each assuming blame for that day's tragic events. As the initial days of hope are replaced by weeks of anxiety and despair, they find themselves increasingly isolated, each wondering: Is she still alive? Will we ever know what happened?Pursuing every angle and refusing to surrender the belief that his daughter is still alive, Caitlin's father struggles through the mountainous terrain, prodding both his son and the local authorities to keep up the search. It is through a most unlikely source, however, that they finally find an answer, in a climax that is stunning in both its execution and resolution.Written with precision and elegance, Johnston captures characters' emotions, divergent thoughts, and moments of bleak loneliness as they search for answers. Descent is both a taut and gripping thriller and a work of outstanding literary merit, a combination of great story and beautiful writing that is certain to garner comparisons with the work of such bestselling writers as Cormac McCarthy and Dennis Lehane.

My husband and I recently started listening to audiobooks while traveling. This one was our fourth and favorite. We absolutely loved this book. The story line was done very well, the narrators were excellent and put a great deal of excitement into their reading. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and was anxious to get back to it each time we had to stop it. It's exciting, holds your attention, the characters really come alive and the readers keep you on the edge of your seat. I highly recommend this audiobook!

As someone who can usually see what is coming toward the end of a book...this one I did not see. Definitely worth a listen.

This is a fantastic listen. It's a tense and wrenching book with a steady pace and tremendous attention to the inner lives of the many characters involved. Highly recommended.

Great read! Was a little comfused for awhile what was going on due to the narrator's voice and charachter switches. Once I got back on track, I couldnt stop listening. I definitely reccomend this book.

Surprising. Difficult to understand the voice of the character, easy to get lost unsure what is happening. Almost didn't make it to the end, enough to keep me going. Then it all made sense at the end. Worth listening to.

Very interesting book. I paced myself with this one because it intrigued me so but the ending left me wanting more information on “the monkey “

Converging character lines can be captivating for some books but this one was not well done. The overuse of adjectives felt like reading a thesaurus and the constant use of “like” and “as” embellishments added unnecessary hours to the read.

I did not like the narration and the excessive use of foul and very crude language ruined this book for me. I finally shut it off at chapter 10!!!

Great book, intense at times, struggled at first with the back and forth between characters. But got into the groove. Recommend

Nothing prepared me for the horrifying descriptions in this book and the detailed violence!!!! Also wildly confusing and never knew who was where - has almost put me off ever ordering another audio book.

If I could, I would give this book 10 stars. It was one of the best books I've ever read/listened to. I'm in love with this author and have already started Current, which I heard was even better than the last one. I will be reading everything this author writes and hope that one day, they make a movie based on this book!!

Very well written, with great narrators. The first part is a little slow, but if you stick with it, the story gets good. The characters seem to all go through their own personal miseries, and slowly their stories interweave until you’re on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next.

AWESOME!! My vote for best book of the year. Beautiful descriptive writing, compelling story, surprising twist, and interwoven connections from beginning to end. The key question ... where do you stand with God?
