Unabridged Audiobook
I love Michael Crummey's work. I learn so much about a part of the world that is quite unique. His insights into characters gives me a deeper understanding of human nature. But this narrator was too heavily accented - it was distracting and over dramatic. It was also not a Newfoundland accent which made his attempts at Crummey's dialogue the biggest distraction. Sweetland is a great novel.
I read this as an audiobook. Great story but the narrator was VERY distracting. Having lived in Newfoundland and knowing the accent well, I so wish they chose someone from there or who could at least do the accent. Anytime the narrator tried to do dialogue he sounded like the offspring of Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery. Also mispronounced NEWFOUNDLAND, capelin, Burin and Javex on many occasions. When he was just reading it was fine but the dialogue parts drove me insane. I really wish I read it instead of listening to it. In any case, great story so I'd still give it an 8.5/10.
