Summary
Exquisite prose and wondrous storytelling have helped make Rudolfo Anaya the father of Chicano literature in English. Indeed, Anaya's tales fairly shimmer with the haunting beauty and richness of his culture. The winner of the Pen Center West Award for Fiction for his unforgettable novel Alburquerque, Anaya is perhaps best loved for his classic bestseller, Bless Me, Ultima... Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will probe the family ties that bind and rend him, and he will discover himself in the magical secrets of the pagan past-a mythic legacy as palpable as the Catholicism of Latin America. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world...and will nurture the birth of his soul.

I LOVED this book! I am 50 years old, grew up in upper South Texas and NEVER was exposed to this type of literature. As a Hispanic, I can’t imagine how different my experiences would have been and my view of myself would have been, if I had. Thank you for this wonderful gift!

Fascinating and imaginative story spiralling out of the mountains of northern New Mexico. I kept wondering about the epigenetics of this poor boy and the effects of his PTSD on his later health. But then, I'm more of a rational science based books geek than a novel lover. Bless Me is a famous book and worth adding to my literary experience. My one complaint about Audiobooks is that the sound is too often poor volume. I have my ear buds turned up full on either the plug in type or the bluetooth and unless I'm in a library setting the sound is too low. It would be better if it were the other way around where you could turn the volume down rather struggling to get more sound...and yes, I've had my hearing tested. This is a regular MAJOR flaw with AB and is so frustrating that I am tempted to drop my subscription.
