This is a historical novel with fictitious characters based on real-life people and events in history which I was completely unaware. The narrator was excellent. It is the type of book that makes one appreciate every day, and realize some people are the victims of dreadful diseases which they must endure every second of every day. It also makes clear that one cannot ever know what the feelings are behind other peoples actions.

Narrator is excellent. I was captivated by this story. It is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and highlights the best and worst of human nature.

A fascinating story of the life of a happy little girl who who is infected with leprosy and sent away from family to Molokai. I had heard about.the "leper colony", but knew nothing about the disease, the island village, or the lives of the people who had the disease and those wonderful people who cared for them. I enjoyed this story as it shows that no matter how bad life may seem, we should seek to enjoy and appreciate the good times. The narrator was excellent.

Rachel a 7 year old girl is taken from her family and home to the leper colony of Kalaupapa on Moloka’i...she makes the best of a devastating situation with fortitude and grace...I knew little of the history of this time and it seemed relevant at this time with fear and misinformation during this pandemic... ostracized and incarcerated...many died but lived with grace and acceptance.
