Summary
A blistering near-future thriller that will propel Richard Morgan onto the bestseller lists - a novel that will be enjoyed by any thriller reader.

What do you buy and sell when the global markets reach saturation point? The markets themselves. Thirty years from now the big players in global capitalism have moved on from commodities. The big money is in conflict investment. The corporations keep a careful watch on the wars of liberation and revolution that burn constantly around the world. They guage who the winners will be and sell them arms, intelligence and power. In return for a slice of the action when the war is won. The reward? A stake in the new nation. It's cynical, brutal and it has nothing to do with democracy and the rule of law. So what else is new? The executives in this lethal game bid for contracts, fight for promotion, secure their lives on the roads. Fighting lethal duels in souped up, heavily armoured cars on the empty motorways of the future. Chris Faulkener has a lethal reputation and a new job at Shorn Associates. Has he got what it takes to make a real killing?

Excellent yarn, with quite an anchor in the real world. Like it could all turn out that way in truth. Great characters, with a bit of a tragic ending. I would love to see more stories in this line of business...

It wasn't as good as the Kovacs Series....but worth listening to. Thought it ironic...he makes "reference" to those books when he talks about a "book the main character is reading that is about a investigator he can switch bodies at will"....I digress: Good plot, great action....decent ending....could have used a little more epilogue

Richard Morgan has created a not too distant future where conflict investment is a type of business, and one gets ahead in the market place by literally killing the competition. Think of a marriage of the movies Mad Max and Wallstreet. While the book has its violent and profane moments, it's also a good listen that keeps you coming back for more. Morgan does not just crank out formula-based novels. My guess is that there will be a sequel.

Angry, foul-mouthed characters, set in a near-future that is bizarre to say the least. I just didn't buy the plot at all, with executives dueling in the bloody car battles in the streets over "conflict investment" deals. Sound confused? That's part for the course. I listened to 7 cds worth of this stuff...and said enough.

Having listened to this author's other titles on the Kovacs series, I was expecting something much grander and more exciting. However, I struggled for most of this book trying to enjoy it. Though it moved very slowly, the concepts were initially difficult to grasp. By 3/4 of the way through I finally started to get into this book. Then it ended and I felt there was more that should have been added for closure. Not his best book.
