Summary
The rose is bursting with meaning: over the centuries it has come to represent love and sensuality, deceit, death, and the mystical unknown. Today the rose enjoys unrivalled popularity across the globe, ever present at life's seminal moments.

Grown in the Middle East two thousand years ago for its pleasing scent and medicinal properties, it has attached itself to us, its needy host and servant, to become one of the most adored flowers across cultures. The rose is well-versed at enchanting human hearts—no longer selected by nature, but by us. From Shakespeare's sonnets to Bulgaria's Rose Valley to the thriving rose trade in Africa and the Far East, via museums, high fashion, Victorian England, and Belle Epoque France, we meet an astonishing array of species and hybrids of remarkably different provenance.

This is the story of a hardy, thorny flower and how, by beauty and charm, it came to seduce the world.

Fantastic literature on all things Rosa. I was looking for a more technical guide- but as I listened it became evident this was book would be more suited in a liberal arts class, and not hard science. Although it does cover the most important aspects of the rose as anatomy, nomenclature, and general growth habit of many plants. The author gives an incredible history of the rose, using both gardens and the individual flowers themselves. As well as through the literature, even considering in depth the religious influence and development of symbology. If you love roses, you will come to adore them. You will appreciate what others have appreciated about them if you don’t. Either way, the rose has been an undeniable part of the human existence, and you will live a richer life for having read it. Ps I even switched to this audio service because it was not longer available at my prior subscription! Love this book and will buy it in hard copy- or maybe it’ll find its way to me. Enjoy!
