Summary
On 25 December 1943 the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst slipped out Altenfjord in Norway to attack Arctic convoy JW55B which was carrying vital war supplies to the Soviet Union. But British naval intelligence knew of the Scharnhorst's mission before she sailed and the vulnerable convoy was protected by a large Royal Naval force including the battleship Duke of York. In effect the Scharnhorst was sailing into a trap.

One of the most compelling naval dramas of the Second World War had begun.

Crompton B.

Knew something about the German Navy during World War Two, but this was a welcome addition to knowledge of the Kriegsmarine. Was not aware of the high stakes for the surface fleet needing a victory so badly to stave off being shelved or British setting of the trap to lure Scharnhorst out into the open. Some books are better suited to audio, i.e. the constant references to navigational fixes was a bit hard to follow without benefit of a chart or map. The narrator was certainly competent but could have done more to vary his delivery for emphasis and dramatic impact.
