The Sharers of Shora are a nation of women on a distant moon in the far future. They are pacifists, they are highly advanced in biological sciences, and they reproduce by parthenogenesis'because there are no males. Conflict erupts when a militaristic neighboring civilization decides to develop their ocean world and sends in an army.

A groundbreaking work both of feminist science fiction and of world-building hard science fiction, A Door into Ocean is the novel that made Joan Slonczewski's reputation as an important science-fiction writer.

'[A]n intriguing ocean world'.[the] schematic political framework is enlivened by the full-blooded characters who negotiate between the two cultures. A Science Fiction Book Club selection.''Publishers Weekly

I bought this book because I love this narrator and I love fantasy. At first, I was dismayed because I wanted a book about mermaids and the realm of Faeries. However, this unique book shares the folklore of no other story I've ever heard or read. Its unique tale of fish-people on an ocean island was so incredibly interesting. Not only was it a statement on commerce, colonialism, religion and science; it was a statement on the human spirit. I was pleasantly surprised and hooked. There is no other book like it. Honestly, give it a try if you're a fantasy lover. it's just awesome.
