A Man Called Ove

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Fredrik Backman

Narrated By: George Newbern

Publisher: Dreamscape Media, LLC

Date: July 2014

Duration: 9 hours 11 minutes

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him 'the bitter neighbor from hell.' But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove's mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents' association to their very foundations.

"As Newbern reveals the events that made Ove into such a curmudgeon, with too big a heart, his straightforward, tender performance will have listeners laughing through their tears." - AudioFile Magazine

At first I kept thinking that I would listen a while longer and figure out if I wanted to continue & why. It just kept drawing me in, and revealing the character so I kept listening. I really enjoyed the book and reader. I'm glad I stayed with it. I agree that this may have been harder to get in to if it were a book that I was physically reading.

I hated this book for the first disc. Ove is a cranky old man and I almost returned it. But as I continued listening, I became absorbed in the story and realized things aren't always as they first appear. Give it a listen!

Very easy to listen to, however I think I would have had a harder time if I were reading it. Slow getting started but beautiful ending.

I fell in love with Ove. On first glance he is just a grumpy old man but Backman skillfully reveals Ove's kind and complex soul. The story is told with humor (I laughed out loud) and sensitivity. I recommend everyone fall in love with Ove and his quirky neighbors. It is time well spent.

At first, I wasn't sure.... seemed depressing. But as the book went on, I fell in love with all the characters.

A heartwarming story, funny and a bit depressing at times. Overall it was an easy read.
