Unabridged Audiobook
This book falls into tropes that are all to common in the LitRPG genre. The entire plot can be passed off as the transcript of a D&D campaign, or in other words, actions are described in sequence without expanding on the emotions and motivations behind those actions. In the first three hours I listened this book, the MC failed to express any emotion towards his wife or child left behind in his old reality nor does he particularly question the events that led to his circumstances beyond a simple "this must be a dream, so let's roll with it,". With a single-tracked mind, he commits himself on a path with zero long-term goals, and the plot develops alongside numerous coincidences and happenstances (i.e. imprisoned with character of royal lineage, capable of wielding daggers without training, etc.) The MC is a frustrating character that I cannot relate to on a personal level, but I am under the impression that I am intended to by the author. The last point I will mention is the lack of consistency or diversity on the narrator's part. The narrator's pacing when voice-acting characters from the alternate reality is unauthentic and awkward with many characters sharing the exact same high-fantasy accent and halting delivery. The feeling of being read to just doesn't work in this genre, and Roberto Scarlato falls short in his execution. In conclusion, Accidental Thief isn't worth the credit.
