Summary:

This magnificent novel is a satirical comedy about the fight for ascendancy among the clergy in a cathedral city. The formidable Mrs. Proudie, the oily Mr. Slope, and the flamboyant Signora Neroni are among the memorable characters vying to be the dominant voice in the quiet diocese of Barchester.

Barchester Towers is the second of six books in this Anthony Trollop series. I am very disappointed that Simply Audio does not carry all six volumes. If one is a fan of fiction from mid-1800's England, you will LOVE this. In fact, if you are a fan of really elegant writing, humor and a plot that really shows one how little, politically, things have changed, this is your meat. Simon Vance is absolutely the best narrator in the business. I just loved the whole experience.

Beautifully descriptive, wonderfully humorous, luxiuriantly sentimental and from a social point of view, fascinatingly intricuit. I generally prefer 18th to 19th century novels but delving into this book has awakened an interest in Trollope that can only be satisfied now by reading all he produced.
