'A polished pearl of a memoir' New York Times

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America - the first African American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the United States and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her -- from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it -- in her own words and on her own terms.

Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations -- and whose story inspires us to do the same.

'A genuine page-turner, full of intimacies and reflections' Evening Standard

'A rich, entertaining and candid memoir. And overall Obama's a fun person to sit alongside as she tells you the story of her life . . . it is as beautifully written as any piece of fiction' i

'Offers new insights into her upbringing on the south side of Chicago and the highs and lows of life with Barack Obama. . . a refreshing level of honesty about what politics really did to her. I have read Barack Obama's two books so far, and this is like inserting a missing piece of reality into the narrative of his dizzying journey' Guardian

'I found myself lifting my jaw from my chest at the end of every other chapter . . . this was not the Obama I thought I knew. She was more' Independent

'An inspirational memoir that also rings true' Daily Telegraph

'It seems a wonderful privilege to have the former First Lady speaking her own words straight into your ear, and her own reading gives the anecdotes extra meaning and emotion' Daily Mail

What an exceptional woman. Loved hearing her voice and her way of telling such a beautiful story. Definitely recommend this read. Wasn’t as political as I thought it would be, was more about how Michelle dealt with the presidency and how her family as a whole did. Loved it.

I was impressed by Michelle Obama before, but that's nothing to how I feel now. She's an inspirational person. I'd love to go for a glass of wine with her, I think she'd be fantastic company. Thanks for sharing your story Michelle.

A very honest book that takes you right inside Michelle Obama's head. Her strength, intelligence and personality come through strongly, as does her frustration at being thrust into a life she would not necessarily have chosen, and which rapidly became not her own. You get the impression that living in the shadow of a great man has not been easy for her and that she wonders at what more she would have achieved in her own right, if he had taken a different path. It is not a fast-paced read and narrated in the soft, languid tones of the author herself - which is a bonus. Definitely a book to have on whilst you are getting on with things and enjoying it but not hanging on every word. I enjoyed listening to it and learned some important things about life in America, and in the fierce intensity of the public spotlight. I was tempted to skip ahead at times, although I didn't. It left me even more convinced that Barack Obama was a very rare thing, a top politician and a US president who is also a very fine human being.

  • Angela B.

Excellent very inspiring and encouraging to young people especially young girls who tend to think they are not good enough

  • Silvia M.

This book was such a pleasure from beginning to end. I feel motivated and inspired in so many ways and my respect and admiration for this incredible woman has grown even bigger than before.

  • Blandine H.

I tried to read the book itself but found it super slow and couldn’t get hooked to it. So decided to go audible way and I have now finished this in a week. I think it helps that Mrs Obama is reading it herself making it even more interesting. Loved the book and you really get to understand why she is who she is.

An amazing, well written Book. It’s even more personal due to Michelle narrating her life story.

  • Lisa J.

best memories and memoir i have ever read. inspirational on so many levels, should be a core text for all diversity and inclusion programs. what a women.

  • Vera O.

An honest and thorough reading of her entire life. Respecting Michelle and the Obamas a lot more now having heard her side of it. What we normally see are the either the evils of politics or/and the pomp and paegentry of being First family in the White House, but this brings to home the humanity of the people who do these jobs. It is definitely a huge sacrifice on their part and a job very few can do and do well. The 19 hours of the book went by so quickly.

Non political post *** We can learn from the US how the country should not be run. Especially in the case of gun licensing and obesity. *** Today ended Michelle Obama's autobiographical book Becoming, which he wrote while highlighting the emotional aspects of a black, woman, wife, mother, first lady and an American citizen. *** All in all, a good book that helped me to understand the aspects related to politicians, because of our low understanding that we think that politics may not affect them. *** Perhaps I have always tried to understand something that has always tried in my view that political commentaries should not have unnecessary talk or tension on the family of the politicians and tried to explain it to others as far as possible. This book taught me to be more human. Thanks Mitchell Sunita
