Summary
When the body of nine-year old Thuy Sen is found in the San Francisco Bay, the police quickly charge Rennell and Payton Price with her grisly murder. A twelve-person jury, abetted by an incompetent defense lawyer, is nearly as quick to find the brothers guilty, and to sentence them both to die for their crimes.

Fifteen years later, overworked pro bono laywer Teresa Peralta Paget, her husband Chris, and stepson Carlo, a recent Harvard law graduate, become convinced not only that Rennell didn't receive a fair trial but that he may well be innocent. Racing against the clock and facing enormous legal obstacles, Teresa, Chris, and Carlo desperately try to stay Rennell's execution, taking the case all the way to the Supreme Court, and to an enormously moving and powerful conclusion.

This was a very l-o-n-g and often pretty boring book. It's a legal procedural so if you like that it's great. The only thing that kept me listening was I was mildly interested in the whole process of our legal system and I wanted to know if an innocent man would be executed. There was just too much repetition and detail for my taste.

I thought the book drug on a little, especially with so many legal issues. HATED the ending.

If you enjoy lawyer/courtroom mystery/drama books, and enjoy in-depth exploration of topical political and social issues, you'll like this one. Well-written, good character development, thorough exploration of moral vs judicial system issues.

Even in looking at other reviewers words, it seems Patterson has done what he meant to do. This is a fictional look at a REAL life issue that needs to be looked at desperately. The story is good enough to stand alone, but with the twist of wanting us to think about the truth behind the fiction this is a must read. Not a huge fan of the narrator, but good enough!

I found this look at the legal system very disturbing. I would like to think that truth means something. The ruthlessness of some of the judical system of our country, which I am sure was truthfully portrayed in the story makes me sad and thankful I have never had to endure the heartless indifference of many. This story is sure to bring a tear to your eye.

This book was not one of Richard North Patterson's best works but it was very detailed and had a very unexpected ending

This book was a little long in the tooth. It also has many flashback moments that are hard to recognize at first. Overall, it was strictly ok.

I found this book to be very detailed on the legal jargon, and sometimes hard to keep up. Need to be a bit more simplistic on the language, but got the idea none the less. Good enough, but wouldn't rent from Richard Patterson again.

This book is not for the faint of heart or the "easy listener". Richard Patterson expects his listeners to learn something in addition to embracing a complex story. It will require your attention and a desire to gain a better understanding of the complexities of capital punishment. Whether you support the death penalty or not, you will finish this book and have your fingers crossed that you never have to encounter a legal system that is doling out final justice in a way that reduces our humaness to written motions and points of order. It will stir your emotions if you are motivated to embrace the twists and turns of the legal arguments.

This book is un-listenable. I am a fan of legal genres but this book droned on endlessly with unnecessary legal procedures and jargon. The reader did nothing to improve the content of the book either. If I could give less than 1-star, I would. That being said, I am still a fan of Richard North Patterson and similar authors, but this truly was un-listenable. I have never returned a CD unfinished.
