This is well-written historical fiction from a under-represented perspective. Generally, popular historical fiction set in India involves hackneyed tropes of English men or women falling in love with "natives" and then overcoming some sort of tragedy. This is a much appreciated departure with the love story between Jahangir, the Mughal emperor and Nur Jahan, his favorite wife whose mausoleum is the Taj Mahal. The narration is wonderfully done and I look forward to Sneha Mathan's future work.
