Mark Robarts, the new young vicar in the village, seeks high connections to further his career but is preyed upon to guarantee a substantial loan, which brings Mark to the brink of ruin. Meanwhile, romances are in bloom, including between Mark's sister, Lucy, and Lord Lufton, with a marriage in store even for Doctor Thorne.

More and more I am convinced that Trollope is the heir to Austen's social satire. This is the sequel to the wonderful Barchester Chronicles, with the playing field expanding to politics, influence peddling, the temptations of dangerous friends and the horrors of debt. There is plenty of love and romance and some exquisitely deliniated characters. I love the exposition, the elegant use of the language, the delicate humor, the inate humanity. Trollope gives us marvellous villians and adorable saints. These books have everything but sex, but you don't miss the sex for the good ethics and riveting clerical adventures. Large lives and small, rich livings and poor, proud and humble, these are books of contrast. They make one think and feel. I want to know all of Trollope now.
