Getting Mother's Body: A Novel

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Suzan-Lori Parks

Narrated By: Suzan-Lori Parks

Publisher: Random House (Audio)

Date: January 2003

Duration: 7 hours 30 minutes

Pulitzer Prize winner Suzan-Lori Parks’s wildly original debut novel, Getting Mother’s Body, follows pregnant, unmarried Billy Beede and her down-and-out family in 1960s Texas as they search for the storied jewels buried—or were they?—with Billy’s fast-running, six-years-dead mother, Willa Mae. Getting Mother’s Body is a true spiritual successor to the work of writers such as Zora Neale Hurston and Alice Walker—but when it comes to bringing hard-luck characters to ingenious, uproarious life, Suzan-Lori Parks shares the stage with no one.

For the first 15 minutes or so I was wavering on liking the book, but I'm glad I stuck with it. It's told from various points of view, and you get a sense of everyone's motivations and history. I grew to like most all of the characters. I found the "matter of fact" way of life perspective of the 60's from a black's point of view intriguing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Suzan-Lori Parks not only wrote this fantastic novel, but narrates the audiobook, and does her own singing! The story is engaging, and gives a true sense of the culture that surrounds the characters. A great "listen"!

This book was an absolute delight. It is read by the author and she is very entertaining. Each chapter is told in the first person by a different character. One character actually sings her chapters (the author is also the singer) in a very Billie Holliday'ish voice. I truly did not want this book to end!
