Summary
Everyone thinks A. J. Sutherland is crazy to buy a rogue stallion that no rider or trainer has been able to tame. But if anybody has the hustle to make something out of that hell-raiser, it’s A. J. She can’t do it alone, however, so she goes after the great Devlin McCloud, an equestrian legend with a bad leg—and a worse attitude.Devlin recognizes a fighter when he sees one—and that horse isn’t a wallflower, either. Before he knows it, he’s got a wild stallion in his empty stable and a hotheaded, heavenly-bodied rider sleeping on his couch. But can he get all three of them through the championship in one piece? This passion he’s found with his rider is compromising training—and at this level of competition, any distraction is not just unprofessional but downright deadly....“Fans of Nora Roberts...will savor every well-written page.” —Booklist“Truly awesome.” —Huntress Book Reviews

I'm a big fan of this author's Black Dagger Brotherhood. The series actually got me reading fiction again for the first time since grad school a zillion years ago. In this book, I was wary after the intro thoughts by the author about this early book actually launching her writing career, with very low expectations. The advice she got from Sue Grafton (famous mystery or suspense novelist I think)that she detailed-well, I stopped what I was doing to listen raptly and with such surprise.(really great writing advice that I did not expect) As the book started, I got more intrigued. It was sooooo much better than any debut romance I could have imagined. Both of the leads were very well developed over the course of the book, the suspense, drama, and deft handling of the issues left me listening for up to 6 hours at a stretch and way way way beyond bedtime. The style was very different from her later BDB series, so much so that I have totally new respect for the author in her ability to shift genres so adeptly. There are times where a bit of treacle creeps in. (note: I have never ever used the word treacle in a sentence until two quick scenes played in this narration and I felt my eyes rolling.) But even with 4 long-awaited audiobooks by other favorite authors beckoning in my media player, I couldn't stop listening to this book and remained surprisingly glued in to see how the characters would deal with three plot lines running. The narrator did a very good job. Some narrators/performers differentiate the voices by depth and intonation. On a few occasions, the lack of this narrator's differentiating voices and no "she said"-"he said" to tell me who was speaking a given line left me a second behind trying to figure out who said what in a rapid fire dialogue. But it wasn't as much of a deterrent as I would've thought. I could figure this out later even while working on other tasks. She does a very respectable job of emoting without too much wincing and even without a voice change for the male lead, I was able to have a clear sense for this wonderful man. I'm a stingy rater, and my personal rating of 4.1 / out of 5 says: dedicate an afternoon/nite to immerse yourself in this book. It should appeal to those of tom-boys, warriors, primadonnas, and haute couture-aholics. I cannot wait to dig up more of JR Ward/Jessica Bird's "traditional" romances. Satisfying, delightful, warming, suspenseful, and surprising. Thank you Ms. Bird for a great listen, and Kate Rudd's interpretation!
