A compelling, often hilarious, and unfailingly compassionate portrait of life inside a women's prison, Orange Is the New Black tells Piper Kerman's dramatic story of her fifteen months behind bars.

I have visited the Pelican Bay State Mens prison with a group called Defy. I could tell that Danberry prison was certainly different than Pelican Bay. Pelican Bay is filled with gangs, and violent, but is getting much better with the entrepreneur in training program offered by DEFY. The narrator was great, but I found the book to be quite slow. It was very interesting at the beginning but it seemed just be the same through much of the book. However, it does help you understand the Prison system

  • Nicole N

I had seen the Netflix series first, and was utterly disappointed that the book is nothing like the show. The show is obviously greatly embellished, but it appears that the embellishments were necessary as the book is a snoozer.

Good book! I seen the TV series first, so it was easy to keep up and put faces to the names. Narrator did a good job

  • Shanna L

If I hadn't seen the series, I would have found this book to be boring. However, if you are a fan of the show, you will find this book entertaining as it resembles season 1 and 2 in some cases.

  • Elizabeth Espinosa

The book is not exactly like the show but over all great!

  • Lupe Castillo

Boring. .kept hoping it would get better. Can't believe they made a TV series. .never seen it I figured the book would be better. WRONG! The narrator was good. .not her fault.

  • Allison Pickett

The narrator used very stereotypical voices for each character, which I found quite offensive. The story itself moved very slowly, and many things were over-described.

  • Lauren Johnson

Disappointed after all the hype. Found it boring. Narrator had wonderful voice but no emotion. Very monotone.

  • Nelly Navarro-Britt

The narrator was amazing. So many different voices and accents. I wish I would have read this book before watching the tv show. It's boring compared to the show. Then again, most of the show is not real. The book is still interesting.

  • John Guidone

I read this entire book and stayed with it to the end however any in the book was not hilarious it was not compelling. Rating one star
