Summary
In the Peak District village of Scarsdale, thirteen-year-old girls didn't just run away. So when Alison Carter vanished in the winter of '63, everyone knew it was a murder. Catherine Heathcote remembers the case well - a child herself when Alison vanished. Now a journalist, she persuades DI George Bennett to speak of the hunt for Alison. But when a fresh lead emerges, Bennett tries to stop the story – plunging Catherine into a world of buried secrets and revelations.

Decent plot but cringe-making dialogues. “I’d be delighted!” No that’s not an authentic voice from 1998 for a young journalist. Unnecessary and frequent twee description “like a mini Sissinghurst”. Just no. It detracts. Wooden and bland style. Disappointingly dreary narrator with a very ropey Welsh accent. It was ok but probably my last (and first) Val McDermid. I really don’t know what the fuss is about.
