The Professor

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Charlotte Brontë

Narrated By: Frederick Davidson

Publisher: Blackstone Audiobooks

Date: January 2006

Duration: 9 hours 3 minutes

Written in a style both brief and realistic-and not in demand by publishers of her time-The Professor relates the experiences of a young man as he changes his life from dreary ancillary work in the local mills to the position of a professor in Belgium. Charlotte Bronte depicts with honesty the vagaries of a young man abroad.

I think the story is slow but I love Charlotte Bronte' and wanted to hear her first novel.

The story is slow. I love Charlotte Bronte's other books but this one is not of their class.

The Professor is a well written book and it's always a pleasure for me to sink into Victorian literature. It's not as great as Villette but certainly worth reading and on the same subject, except her main character is not a woman teacher but a man who goes to Belgium to find a profession and love. It's as if she had relived her own experience in Belgium (where she fell in love with a Belgian teacher who was married) in fictional form both as a woman (Lucy Snow) and as a man (The Professor).
