Fascinating psychological study. One has to empathize with someone who so deeply doesn't get it. And a revealing look at the self-regarding aristocracy of England between the wars. Of course beautifully narrated by the incomparable Simon Prebble. All together a worthwhile audiobook.

I loved this novel, even though it is slow, or maybe because of its slowness. Stevens is revealing the complicated life of being a butler in the super-high-society of England, especially before WWII. It is a story of repressing feelings, both personal and political, because the best butler is the one that has no feelings whatsoever. But everyone does, and something almost always bring people to looking back, some regrets, and big questioning of one's actions and words or the lack of them. Dignity, honor, service - these filled Stevens' life for years, maybe they are not the most important and honorable values after all? I loved the Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, and his ability to write such different styles, such different settings and time so beautifully just adds more points to this wonderful author.
