A clash of two opposing views of morality is brought to life in the ruthless Wolf Larsen, a strong believer in survival of the fittest, and Humphrey VanWeyden, a civilized man shocked by Larsen's cruel nature. The struggle begins when VanWeyden is rescued from a shipwreck by Larsen and is forced into a life of slavery aboard a seal-hunting vessel.

Sea stories of this era fascinate me. The last of the sailing ships were magnificent machines. The narrative of things sea-going appeared completely authentic to me. I have read Jack London's better-known works and I can understand why this one is slightly more obscure. His study of Wolf Larson as a person completely rational, but completely without conscience is interesting, but sometimes clumsy. The romantic ending is fun, but a little contrived. It is well-narrated. I recommend it.
