Duration: 4 hours 57 minutes

Summary:

Written at the start of World War I when his son Borys was at the Western Front, The Shadow-Line is Conrad's effort to open man's eyes to the meaning of war through the story of a young, inexperienced sea captain who crosses the "shadow-line" to adulthood.

"Fred Williams's mature, gravelly voice carries all the weight of age and experience as surely as if the graying Conrad himself were, years later, telling the tale of his own first command."-AudioFile

This book takes the reader into the mind of a sea captain as he takes over his first command and overcomes three simultaneous challenges: superstition, disease, and his becalmed sailing ship. The action will be slow if you have a short attention span. For me, the character studies were well worth the needed concentration. The narration was excellent.
