In this installment of the best selling historical fiction series featuring Major Richard Sharpe, a corrupt political enemy is determined to disband the South Essex Regiment and destroy Sharpe's life.

Sharpe returns to England to discover an illegal recruiting ring that sells soldiers like cattle to other divisions. The ringleaders know Sharpe is on their trail, and they try to kill him at every turn. But Sharpe is fighting for his command, and as he moves from the dark slums of London to the highest courts of political power, Sharpe will risk charges of treason and death for a final chance at revenge.

'Blackstone Audio is fortunate to have a reader with such a range of emotional expression, such a knack for characterization, and such an obvious relish for the task at hand. Davidson knows the recurring characters well and has perfected their patterns of speech and delivery: he also seems to take pleasure in establishing the new characters.' 'Kliatt

As all the Sharpe books, this one is excellent. Frederick Davidson is the perfect narrator for Sharpe and Sargeant Harper as they go about their travels and conquests in the era of Napoleanic wars in Europe, interpreting the speech of all nationalities, ages, and genders, bringing life to every character. Cornwelll is the consummate storyteller, integrating fictional and nonfictional elements as he goes, so you get the sense that all of these things could actually have happened.
