'An amazingly intimate, compassionate, gripping portrait of addiction, courage and love.' – The judges of the Booker Prize

'Douglas Stuart has written a first novel of rare and lasting beauty.' – The Observer

'Shuggie Bain means so much to me. It is such a powerfully written story . . . I love a heartbreak book but there is so much love within this one, particularly between Shuggie and his mother Agnes.' – Dua Lipa

It is 1981. Glasgow is dying and good families must grift to survive. Agnes Bain has always expected more from life, dreaming of greater things. But Agnes is abandoned by her philandering husband, and as she descends deeper into drink, the children try their best to save her, yet one by one they must abandon her to save themselves.

It is her son Shuggie who holds out hope the longest. Shuggie is different, he is clearly no’ right. But Shuggie believes that if he tries his hardest, he can be normal like the other boys and help his mother escape this hopeless place.

Shuggie Bain lays bare the ruthlessness of poverty, the limits of love, and the hollowness of pride. For readers of A Little Life and Angela's Ashes, it is a heartbreaking novel by a brilliant writer with a powerful and important story to tell.

'A heartbreaking novel' – The Times

'Tender and unsentimental . . . The Billy Elliot-ish character of Shuggie . . . leaps off the page.' – Daily Mail

Absolutely loved this book. Heartbreaking but also uplifting. My only gripe with the audio book was that the narrator was not a native Glaswegian so there was a lack of authenticity throughout. This may not be a deal breaker for many non Scottish readers, as a Scottish accent of any type might be enough. However, as a proud Glaswegian myself, this grated on me as the local dialect is such a significant and essential part of this book - giving it depth and relatability. A fake Glasgow accent just didn’t cut it. I think I’d have much preferred reading the book but I’d already bought the audio version.

Fantastic piece of work by the author. A tough read at times but thoroughly captivating.

A very bleak look at a time and place that was very tough for the working class that suddenly weren't working and the social fall out of that. Can't say I enjoyed it as it was very depressing but it was beautifully written and the narrator was brilliant really adding to the "feel" of the time and place.

Despite the very dark themes of the violence created by deprivation, in and outside of the home, and of a homophobic society which rejects and mocks a young boy who is gentle and feminine, this book is so vivid and brilliantly written that it does not feel too heavy. The characters are so well drawn that you feel as if you know them in depth and the relationships between them are fascinating and moving.

Tear jerking, heart wrenching and at times tough to listen to yet I couldn’t stop listening. Shuggie will remain with me for quite some time. I wonder what life would have instore for him next.

Shuggie Bain has proved to be the best reading/listening experience I’ve had in years. There were tears and laughter and an appreciation for the brilliant character development including the well drawn sense of place. I totally recommend this book! The narrator bought it to life perfectly.
