A string of gruesome murders show the obvious markings of a demented serial killer, and Sweden's Detective Wallander is frantic to find him before he strikes again. Fascinating and astute, Sidetracked is a compelling mystery enhanced by keen social awareness.

Another brilliant crime story from what has become my favorite crime series. Wallander is hunting a serial killer, and ends up being the hunted. The atmosphere is dark and the murders gruesome. It also paints a good picture of the political and social climate in Sweden. I love to read how Wallander's brain works, he is so logical and brilliant. But at the same time a flawed human being. Outstanding! Warning, don't read if you like action-driven stories, even though this was a bit more suspenseful than the others I read.

I can't recommend this book. The reader had the most irritating voice I have ever heard professionally reading. The sound was irritating and his enunciation was as if he were reading to a child. And the writing - not good. Mankell seems to think he has to tell you everything that characters are thinking and feeling, rather than letting the action and the dialogue convey this naturally.
