Slaughterhouse Five

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Kurt Vonnegut

Narrated By: Ethan Hawke

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers

Date: November 2003

Duration: 5 hours 55 minutes

Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic Slaughterhouse-Five introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes 'unstuck in time' after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden.

Slaughterhouse-Five is not only Vonnegut's most powerful book, it is also as important as any written since 1945. Like Catch-22, it fashions the author's experiences in the Second World War into an eloquent and deeply funny plea against butchery in the service of authority. Slaughterhouse-Five boasts the same imagination, humanity, and gleeful appreciation of the absurd found in Vonnegut's other works, but the book's basis in rock-hard, tragic fact gives it unique poignancy -- and humor.

Okay, so like... I had to read this book for my AP English class and I usually hate the books we have to read, but this book was different. It kept me intrigued all the way through and honestly, I finished it in a little less than a week. As someone so constantly procrastinates, this is pretty much a first. So, thanks Kurt Vonnegut. I just might have to read another one of your books, but this time it won't be because my teacher forced me. Also, I really enjoyed the narrator's voice. It was calm and soothing to listen to, made listening/reading a lot easier and better.

Wonderful! Great narration! I honestly didn't think I was going to like this book....I loved it. I absolutely recommend this book. It was delightfully absurd and insightful (these two concepts are not easy to accomplish simultaneously, but Vonnegut is masterful!
