Summary
From #1 New York Times bestselling author of Seeing Red comes this thrilling novel full of jarring, cinematic twists and breathless suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat.

When millionaire Paul Wheeler is murdered, his family retains renowned lawyer Derek Mitchell to defend the victim’s nephew Creighton—although the police have not charged the young man with the crime. Wheeler’s mistress Julie Rutledge, who is also a suspect, believes that Creighton is the killer despite his rock-solid alibi, and she’ll do almost anything in her quest to prove his guilt—even ruin Derek’s career. But as Derek learns of Creighton’s darker side, especially his bizarre fascination with movie murders, the more he agrees with Julie’s suspicion. The clock ticks down to a shocking ending as Derek and Julie join forces to find the truth. Has Creighton begun re-enacting cinema’s goriest scenes and, if so, who will be his unwilling co-stars? They won’t know until the final Smash Cut.

I would have given this book five stars, but time and time and time again these savvy and well educated characters - including an attorney - encountered a situation where any normal person - like or me - would immediately call the police, and chose not to for lame reasons. Therefore, they became suspects, unable to prove this or that happened to them and at a specific time - because they were so stupid they did not report the incident to the police. They also kept putting themselves alone and in harm's way when any sane person would know, by that time in the plot, not to.It made this well written page-turner a wee bit disappointing.

If I live to be a very old woman, I'll NEVER understand why ANYONE, including and most importantly authors, would ever sanction the abridgment of a novel! The story in Smash Cut is good but the DEPTH of it probably lies on the floor of the abridger's hut deep in the woods someplace. I mourn the loss.

A good story if a little predictable....but, it was still fun to read. The "bad" guy is easy to hate and I was rooting for the "couple" all the way. A great read if you aren't looking for anything "deep".

Good, fast-paced audiobook. Lot's of twists and turns, which made it good for car travel. Not sure what the unabridged version is like, but I preferred the abridged version.

The story line was upsetting and at times just ridiculous, example: the relationship secret of Julie and Paul-just silly. I felt the author just ran out of original ideas so she made up for it with shocking events. The senseless brutal slaughter of the main character's dog, seemed like an afterthought by the author(show the reader that the killer really is a monster) was not needed. In fact, it turned me off to the rest of the story. It made the Julie and Derrick seem shallow and cheesy. Overall, a great disappointment from a usually good author
