Summary:

Edward Lincoln is a worldwide celebrity who plays impossibly daring detectives on the big screen. But in reality he is an ordinary man currently stuck in an extraordinary spot. Nerissa, his ailing godmother, had pleaded with him to travel to South Africa to investigate whether someone was tampering with her racehorses. He could not refuse her.

Once there, Lincoln is overwhelmed by autograph hounds and high suspicions. And when sudden perils cross his path and murder makes a horrific appearance, Lincoln, the actor-turned-investigator, is plunged into a plot of gold, greed, and gilded lives. He ultimately realizes that the only way to uncover the killer is to give not only the performance of his life, but a performance to save his life.

Dick Franis always writes an interesting mystery book. He makes you feel for his characters and you can enjoy how they solve the dilemmas that they find themselves facing. This book is fast moving, delightful read.

This is a bit of a different type of story for Dick Francis in that the hero is a British movie star. He owns horses and a distant relative ask him to go to South Africa to check on her recently acquired race horse string that have not been running up to their breeding. Attempts are made on his life with lots of action and suspense. Good description of the country and animals. Good read and great narration.

I like Dick Francis, but this is not one of his best efforts. If you like a story where you know who the murderer is pretty much all along, and the hero goes from one near-death experience to another, then you will be happy. Otherwise, forget it.
