Summary:

You couldn't really tell about Mama's brain just from looking at her, but it was obvious as soon as she spoke. She had a high voice, like a little girl's, and she only knew twenty-three words. I know this for a fact, because we kept a list of the things Mama said tacked to the inside of the kitchen cabinet. Most of the words were common ones, like good and more and hot, but there was one word only my mother said, soof.

Although she lives an unconventional lifestyle with her mentally disabled mother and their doting neighbor, Bernadette, Heidi has a lucky streak that has a way of pointing her in the right direction. When a mysterious word in her mother's vocabulary begins to haunt her, Heidi's thirst for the truth leads her on a cross-country journey in search of the secrets of her past.

A dramatic tour de force by the best-selling author of Regular Guy.

This was a delightful book about an unconventional family and the strength and coming of age of a young girl. This book shows that families come in all shapes and sizes and that love can be found in the unlikeliest of places. I enjoyed the narrator and the story as Heidi's life unfolds as she seeks answers about her past that her mother is not capable of answering. A nice "feel good" book.

What a great listen this was. The simplicity of the novel is for everyone. To know how special life is in all its normalcy gives such life to this moving and memorable work. I give it 5 stars.

I'm a 5th grade English teacher who usually prefers fantasy stories, but this was a gripping narrative read by an excellent presentor who thoroughly characterized every speaker. The story was involving and important--though slightly unrealistic in some small ways. It was an interesting and original commentary on communication, perspective, and the nature of love. It also dealt tastefully and sensitively with an unusal scenario involving mentally disabled or dysfunctional people. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to adults and children 10 and up.
