Summary
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (published 1876) is a very well-known and popular story concerning American youth. Mark Twain's lively tale of the scrapes and adventures of boyhood is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri, where Tom Sawyer and his friend Huckleberry Finn have the kinds of adventures many boys can imagine: racing bugs during class, impressing girls, especially Becky Thatcher, with fights and stunts in the schoolyard, getting lost in a cave, and playing pirates on the Mississippi River.

One of the most famous incidents in the book describes how Tom persuades his friends to do a boring, hateful chore for him: whitewashing (i.e., painting) a fence.

This was the first novel to be written on a typewriter.

I had never read any of Mark Twain's books so I thought I would give this one a listen. I am not sure why it is considered a classic. I found it boring. I have read and listened to a lot of books from around this time and have enjoyed them. So my opinion can be written off as a difference in the era. The stories were just boring.

I didn’t read this growing up and figured this was a good time to catch up on some classics while I was out exercising. The story was okay; maybe bc I’m older I just didn’t appreciate it the way I would have when I was younger. I thought the narration was a bit monotone at times which made me lose interest (I did speed up the reading; not sure if that played a part). Some parts I had to listen to twice bc it just didn’t capture my attention. With that said, I’m very thankful Audiobooks offers ‘free’ books- such a great reason to listen to a book I probably wouldn’t select, otherwise.

I thought the narrator was fine not amazing but very good. I have a bit of 10 and could see him in this story even though it is dated. I enjoyed this very much and am now looking for Huckleberry Finn to listen to.

A wonderful story with fantastic insight into the mind of a boy coming-of-age. Delightful yet moving in its simplicity. The dialogues between Becky and Tom are especially my favorite. The narration is superb.
