Summary
A top ten bestseller of 1906, The House of a Thousand Candles is part adventure/mystery and part romance. The book begins with young Jack Glenarm returning from various exploits in Europe and Africa for the reading of his grandfather’s will. In it, he stands to inherit his grandfather’s estate, but only if he can remain for one year in residence at the old man’s unfinished “House of a Thousand Candles” in Annandale, Indiana, with only his grandfather’s mysterious valet for company. If he violates the terms of the will, the house will go to a young woman, heretofore unknown to him, whom the will also forbids Jack to marry if he wants to retain his inheritance. This all sounds very mundane to Jack and he fully expects to be quite bored in very short order. Soon after Jack’s arrival at Glenarm House, however, various strange occurrences ensue, and he soon finds himself absorbed in the most lively adventure of his life! (summary by J. M. Smallheer)

Loved the story but it was the worst narration I've ever heard! First of all it should have been narrated by a man. Her speech was stilted and unemotional. Horrible narration!!!

I enjoyed this book and kept finding time to listen to more. I must admit that I skipped forward to the end because I didn't have the patience to find out if it had a good ending, then I went back again and settled down to enjoy it all. Yes, my type of book.

A great read with lots of excitement and intrigue. Narration is good if you can get over the two appalling supposedly Irish accents.

I really enjoyed this. At first I was a bit put off by a woman reading as the main character was a man, but soon just enjoyed her excellent reading abilities. The very end was a bit drawn out, going a few years into the future, but did not spoil the overall pleasure of the work.

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Good old fashioned intrigue & a twisty plot, Agatha Christie style. Narration was well done.

Great classic novel with fabulous old English words. The narration was fine but the bad accents were distracting.

My hearing isn't the best, and the narrator was a little hard to understand. But it did keep me on the edge of my seat! I wouldn't have guessed the ending in a million years!

4.5 stars. One of the better old mysteries I've listened to. Classic haunted house story where things go bump in the night, hidden passages are discovered, plausible motive for murder, surprising plot twists, and more. IMO, the story would have been better had the author not appended a quirky romance to the excellent plot, but times being what they were, I suppose it was a literary requirement.
