Summary:

Sixteen-year-old Kaye is a modern nomad. Fierce and independent, she drifts from place to place with her mother's rock band until an ominous attack forces Kaye back to her childhood home. There, amid the blue-collar New Jersey backdrop, Kaye finds herself an unwilling pawn in an ancient and violent power struggle between two rival faerie kingdoms - a struggle that could very well mean her death. "Debauchery, despair, deceit, and grisly death-what more could you ask for from a fairy tale? . . . A luscious treat for fans of urban fantasy and romantic horror." -Kirkus Reviews, starred review "The exquisite faeries haunt as well as charm. . . . A gripping read." -Publishers Weekly, starred review

One of my favorite books as a teen (one of the few books that I've bothered to re-read), so I sought it out here to revisit it. The story is engaging as ever and the narrator for the most part does a great job, her voice is fairly easy to listen to while having that cool edge that suits Kaye and her world. Roiben's voice takes a bit of getting used to though; the accent, tone, and inflection that the narrator chooses are awkward and falls a bit short for me, but oh well! Looking forward to getting the other two books in the series.

An amazing story. I read this series in highschool and I love it now as much as I did then. Holly Black's books are so well written with velvety words and in details I could never imagine to even think of. Her writing brings me on a magical journey with Kay and her friends and foes. She makes the story relatable and realistic with that big dash of fairy tale sprinkled on top. In all honesty though, there was something about the way the narrator read that didn't really do it for me. Something lacking I think. I was still able to enjoy the book all the way through, but at some parts the words could have used a little more emphasis and enthusiasm.

Excellent top to bottom. Beautiful storyline and the narrator portrays the characters fully and completely.

Awesome start to what I hope will be a long standing series. The characters and places are so well done that you picture what everything is. The Narrator did an awesome job. I hope the next narrator will be as good
