Lorca, the daughter of a demanding chef, spends hours poring over cookbooks, seeking out hard-to-find ingredients, and preparing her mother's favorite foods in the hope of eliciting her distant parent's love and attention. Lorca also frequently behaves in self-destructive ways that may cause her to be sent away to boarding school. In an attempt to win a place in her mother's heart, Lorca resolves to replicate her mother's ideal meal and she sets off to do the necessary research to make sure her attempt is a success. Meanwhile, Victoria, an Iraqi-Jewish immigrant and recent widow, begins to offer Iraqi cooking lessons in her home. In preparing for this new phase of her life, she purges her apartment of everything her husband owned and uncovers a note from his past that reminds her of the daughter they gave up for adoption forty years earlier. When Lorca becomes Victoria's student, they find a strong mutual connection.
