A shocking discovery on a honeymoon in paradise changes the lives of a picture-perfect couple in this taut psychological thriller debut—for readers of Ruth Ware, Paula Hawkins, and Shari Lapena.

“A psychological thriller that captivated me from page one. What unfolds makes for a wild, page-turning ride! It’s the perfect beach read!”—Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club x Hello Sunshine book pick)

If you could make one simple choice that would change your life forever, would you?
Erin is a documentary filmmaker on the brink of a professional breakthrough, Mark a handsome investment banker with big plans. Passionately in love, they embark on a dream honeymoon to the tropical island of Bora Bora, where they enjoy the sun, the sand, and each other. Then, while scuba diving in the crystal blue sea, they find something in the water. . . .
Could the life of your dreams be the stuff of nightmares?
Suddenly the newlyweds must make a dangerous choice: to speak out or to protect their secret. After all, if no one else knows, who would be hurt? Their decision will trigger a devastating chain of events. . . .
Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?
Wonder no longer. Catherine Steadman’s enthralling voice shines throughout this spellbinding debut novel. With piercing insight and fascinating twists, Something in the Water challenges the reader to confront the hopes we desperately cling to, the ideals we’re tempted to abandon, and the perfect lies we tell ourselves.

Advance praise for Something in the Water

“With unreliable characters, wry voices, exquisite pacing, and a twisting plot, [Catherine] Steadman potently draws upon her acting chops. . . . A darkly glittering gem of a thriller from a new writer to watch.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Captivating . . . daring . . . The threats and increasingly bad decisions accelerate with Bourne-like velocity. . . . Steadman [is] a newcomer worth watching.”—Publishers Weekly

“An unbearably tense debut with a knockout premise, Something in the Water had me hooked from the very first sentence. Thrilling and thought-provoking, it’s the perfect beach read. I devoured it!”—Riley Sager, bestselling author of Final Girls

This book held my attention the entire time. I only listen to my audiobooks in the car on my commute but not with this one. I found myself listening while cooking and cleaning. I have a feeling there will be a second book and I really hope it happens! Dear Reese, in your movie version please cast Emily Blunt as the lead!

Interesting story, but the crazy amount of cussing was distracting and diminished the overall affect.

Such a FANTASTIC book. Could not stop listening from the very beginning, basically binged the whole book in less than 3 days. The fact that the author narrated the book herself makes it even more impressive, if that’s possible. Brilliant actress and writer.

The book was written with extreme detail and finesse. I agree that it would have been better with the "F" word substituted, but I absolutely cannot wait for the next book!

I really liked the story and the narration but was extremely disappointed in the authors use of the f*** word. It was consistently used and degraded the characters

Loved this book, her way of dealing with things was impressive. She was a good heroine and I'm glad she made it through. It's a good read.

It started off a little slow but it was very good and I loved how the storylines complimented each other and were seamless. It made perfect sense. I would recommend and feel like the author left me wondering if the main character could carry on into future novels. Excellent listen. Definitely recommend

  • Michael T.

It started out a little slow at first, but once it got going I was hooked in! The ending could of been better but maybe that’s because I wanted it to keep going… lol Good read and great narration!

  • Heidi H.

Amazing. Listen to this book in two days

  • L G.

narrator was excellent and storyline was pretty good

  • Anonymous

So slow and predictable. No twist or surprise. A disappointing listen.

Great story. Great narrator Worth every second Fabulous characters

  • Marie I.

Good story but too redundant. I did listen through and really liked it but I was able to fast forward several times and didn’t miss the extra words. Bummer on the wordiness

  • Riley2309

Couldn’t stop listening! Great book and unexpected ending.

  • Kristi Tiseo

So good!!! The first 1/4 is a bit boring, but once you're passed that, it's so suspenseful! You will not want to quit listening. The narration is fantastic!!

  • Andrew02

Great book. I could not stop listening. I think having the author as the narrator made it so good. The echoed phone calls was cool. I'm hoping there is series coming. Will read more of her books.

  • Staci L.

had me intrigued from the very beginning. not at all what I had imagined would happen at the end. but ended amazingly none the less. a sequel please...

  • Chloe C.

I sped up the audio a little bit. But this book kept me on my toes and had a big twist.

  • Chantel B.

Had me hooked from the first page. Great story line and plot. The narrator was spot on. Definitely recommend this book.

  • John G

Excellent book listen to book on my travels from Lubbock to Houston and back . Narrator/author very good

  • Sandy G.

The story line was a little far fetched at times. The narrator was really good though.

  • Alyssa N.

Great narration. But book was not my favorite.

  • Cathy

Loved the story; loved that Catherine herself narrated this. She was fantastic and so was the book!! I would highly recommend this book!

  • Sarah H.

At first, I was hesitant - usually fiction read by the author is clunky, in my opinion. However, Catherine Steadman does a pretty good job of reading her own work. I kept listening - couldn't wait to hear how it all turned out.

  • Corinne R.

This book was awesome! Totally didn’t see the twist at the end. I listened to this book in 2 days. I couldn’t turn it off.

  • Stephanie K.

I have to disagree with the other reviews- the book was hard to get into, a lot of irrelevant details were told. The author was great at narrating the story herself and had an enjoyable voice, but I feel like the story itself could have been told in 7 hours and just as thorough. A decent book, but not suspenseful and fairly anti climatic.

  • Tara M.

What a page turner!! Great book - really enjoyed it

  • Melodie G.

Very long audio book 11+ hours. The story moves a little slow then quickly wraps up without a true understanding of why things happened. Narration was enjoyable.

  • Donald B.

Outstanding read that I finished in a weekend. The narration was my fantastic. Hope there will be more.

  • Dorothy B.

Loved the suspense. Loved the narration. Sometimes would get bogged down with too much detail. Overall 4 out of 5.

  • Jenna C.

This was an overall good book with a very interesting ending. I thought it dragged a bit at times, and feel as though points to be made were drawn out further than necessary, but it was an overall good listen. The narrator being the author was wonderful and she has a beautiful voice.

  • YODIT S.

A good storyline, with a twist.

  • Anonymous

A bit slow but kept you engaged

  • Kathlene G.

The story took almost the entire book to get to the climax of the story. It’s wasn’t bad but not very exciting either.

  • Margie C.

Kept me wanting to hear more the whole time!

  • Ashleigh S.

Kept me engaged every step of the way. Loved the character developments. Great read!

  • Gidget P.

Loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. Very good!

  • Donna M.

Really enjoyed the story from beginning to end

  • Erica V.

Wow...this book was awesome. The author did an excellent job in writing this engrossing story and in narrating it. Lots of twists and turns. Just a great read.

  • Nancy K.

This has been my favorite book of the summer. So many times I found myself yelling at the characters, “what are you doing!!!” Great suspense and great story.

  • Kim H.

    Love, love, love this book!

  • Leah R.

I really enjoyed this audiobook! I especially like the fact the author was the narrator. It kept me in suspense the whole time.

  • Cynthia G.

The Author is the Narrator and is FANTASTIC! The story keeps ones interest, has enough twists to be interesting & Ms. Steadman is an amazing narrator- thank you for entertaining me on a cross County drive

  • Anonymous

Insanely suspenseful. Listened to it in car.

  • Linda B.

Loved the twist at the end. Didn’t see it coming. Good read!

  • Shannon B.

    Beautiful narration! Fun read.

  • Margie S.

I love this book. I didn't like the ending but I agree it is a great sequel for a movie.

  • Kaitlin M.

This was a great book. Starts off super strong and finishes with an ending you'll never see coming. Left a sense of unease in me that I long for when reading a crime/thriller/mystery. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves a non-stop thriller.

  • Susan G.

I want to see this as a movie! And the ending is a great segway to a sequel. Well done! Enjoyed it very much.
