Written By: Leo Tolstoy

Narrated By: Frederick Davidson

Date: January 2006

Duration: 60 hours 48 minutes

Often called the greatest novel ever written, War and Peace is at once a historical war epic, a philosophical study, and a celebration of the Russian spirit. Noted for its mastery of realistic detail and psychological analysis, it follows the metamorphosis of five aristocratic families against the backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Individual stories interweave as each of Tolstoy’s memorable characters seek fulfillment, fall in love, make mistakes, and become scarred by war in different ways. Out of this complex narrative emerges a profound examination of the individual’s place in the historical process.

Thomas Mann praised Tolstoy for his Homeric powers: “To be played upon by the animal keenness of this eye, the sheer power of this creative attack, the entirely clear and true greatness…of this epic, is to find one’s way home…to everything within us that is fundamental and sane.”

The reading on this book was well done, except for when the reader read quotes from Military Officers.

It's no surprise this epic account of Napoleon's French invasion of Russia, told from a Russian perspective , has survived the ages. The story of love, daily life, social conventions, travails and joys and tragedies seem real and draw us in. Equally captivating are the stories of battle from the viewpoint of the soldiers, their leaders, the invaders, and the invaded. As an added bonus,Tolstoy shares his personal perspectives of war, warfare, power, wealth, politics and historians.Happily he saves this for the end , like a night cap, not interrupting the flow of the main event. 5 stars for the book and 5 stars for the narrator, who did a job worthy of this magnificent novel! Bravo!

Although War & Peace is a very, very, long book it is worth the effort. It provides an interesting Russian perspective of geopolitical circumstances at the turn of the 19th century. Tolstoy presents his view of societal discord that culminates in Russia’s own revolution one hundred years later. Glad I stuck with it to finish the book.

The book, War and Peace, is of course a five-star classic which I could never find the time to sit and read; so, this audio book was exciting to download. Problem was my iPhone 5 could not handle the load (due to my limited GB load capacity). My iPhone 7 with maximum GB had no problem downloading the book The only reason I gave the audio book 4 stars is because every so often the recording would skip a beat. Annoying as this was, as far as I could tell content wasn't lost but I'm not certain. Nonetheless, being too excited to read on I kept going. Frederick Davidson was only okay for reading. It took a while for him to find his modulation of intonation; and when he did, it didn't always work. Having said this, I'm very grateful War and Peace is available to audio read. Thank you Blackstone publisher.
