The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Stephen King

Narrated By: Anne Heche

Date: April 1999

Duration: 7 hours 0 minutes

The acclaimed #1 New York Times bestseller from Stephen King—uniquely frightening suspense about a young girl lost in the woods as night falls, with only the voice of her beloved Red Sox relief pitcher to sustain her and help her survive—maybe.

During a six-mile hike on the Maine-New Hampshire branch of the Appalachian Trail, nine-year-old Trisha McFarland quickly tires of the constant bickering between her older brother and her recently divorced mother. But when she wanders off by herself, she becomes lost in a wilderness maze full of peril and terror. As night falls, Trisha has only her ingenuity as a defense against the elements, and only her courage and faith to withstand her mounting fears. For solace she tunes her headphones to broadcasts of Boston Red Sox baseball games and follows the gritty performances of her hero, relief pitcher Tom Gordon. And when the reception begins to fade, Trisha imagines that Tom Gordon is with her—the protector from an enemy who may or may not be imagined…one who is watching her, waiting for her in the dense, dark woods…

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Completely different from King's normal style of writing. Surprisingly big spiritual parallels driving through the book. One is pressed to wonder if the heroines experience is psychological or supernatural. Anne Heche does a great job on the narration. Skeptical of her at first but very well done. One of my favorite King reads so far.

One of my favorite books ever! I originally read it when it came out in 1999, I was 12 years old, but I stopped reading with a few chapters left. I have re-read it many time since then and still never finished it, I was scared for what would happen to Trisha at the end. This Audio version was actually extremely good and painted the picture of the story just as my own inner voice had. This is a GREAT book for young readers especially ones that would like to read Stephen King but aren't old enough for most of his work. I adore the fact that there isn't actual "pretend horror" for the most part, this story is about something else. Its about something that is inside all of us, a need to survive. Because it is from the view of a 9 year old girl dealing with a bickering family that has been separated and than is about her survival in the woods, it can be hard to get into at first. But if you take the time, this book can take you on a hard journey you will be hoping to survive, with a strong willed little girl you will never forget.

I enjoyed this story although I agree the the other review, it is not scary. You feel for the main charcter and root for her the whole time but I would have liked a little more imagination in terms of what the girl sees (or thinks she sees) in the forrest.

I liked the story. It flowed well but tended to drag on. I felt the main character was well-developed and I was happy with the ending. But, I was expecting more horror as only Stephen King can give and this one lacked any real horror at all. It had some suspense but was mostly about survival. Not much really happened in this story except for the main character coming to grips with who she was and using her wits to find her way home over a 7 day period. Not bad but not my favorite King book.
