Summary
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A searing memoir of reckoning and healing by acclaimed journalist Stephanie Foo, investigating the little-understood science behind complex PTSD and how it has shaped her life

“Achingly exquisite . . . providing real hope for those who long to heal.”—Lori Gottlieb, New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, NPR, Mashable, She Reads, Publishers Weekly

By age thirty, Stephanie Foo was successful on paper: She had her dream job as an award-winning radio producer at This American Life and a loving boyfriend. But behind her office door, she was having panic attacks and sobbing at her desk every morning. After years of questioning what was wrong with herself, she was diagnosed with complex PTSD—a condition that occurs when trauma happens continuously, over the course of years.

Both of Foo’s parents abandoned her when she was a teenager, after years of physical and verbal abuse and neglect. She thought she’d moved on, but her new diagnosis illuminated the way her past continued to threaten her health, relationships, and career. She found limited resources to help her, so Foo set out to heal herself, and to map her experiences onto the scarce literature about C-PTSD.

In this deeply personal and thoroughly researched account, Foo interviews scientists and psychologists and tries a variety of innovative therapies. She returns to her hometown of San Jose, California, to investigate the effects of immigrant trauma on the community, and she uncovers family secrets in the country of her birth, Malaysia, to learn how trauma can be inherited through generations. Ultimately, she discovers that you don’t move on from trauma—but you can learn to move with it.

Powerful, enlightening, and hopeful, What My Bones Know is a brave narrative that reckons with the hold of the past over the present, the mind over the body—and examines one woman’s ability to reclaim agency from her trauma.

Besides the cursing that litters the book, it was one of the best books around the topic of CPTSD I've listened to. Not because it was professional but because it wasn't. It was weighty because I could feel my way through it...she journeyed for herself but she shared for ME, the listener with CPTSD!!! I found myself trembling, tears streaking my face, puddling on my steering wheel, as she defined CPTSD with examples of what it could look like. I could go in and in about this book but mostly it was well thought (lived) though and engaging even through the pain

Holy crapola!! this is one brave a** memoir. take deep breaths when you start listening to this. have snacks. drink adult beverages if necessary. the abuse is mind bending. but if you or someone in your life has experienced anything like this (and it's A LOT more common than they want us to think it is...MANY of us have this in our families...) This memoir is an amazing resource. complex PTSD. it creates some amazing and fascinating and gifted people!

This book was so good and validating. The extreme violence and abuse that Stephanie experienced during childhood was so devastating and heartbreaking yet her built in wisdom and courage allowed her to power on and her nervous system intelligence allowed her to survive. The turning point towards the end of book after years of searching is the most profound. As she finally receives the validating parent through relational therapy. Not that this totally heals her but it opens up the window of tolerance and ability to truly express and honor her feelings and self that existed before the traumatic events that stacked up. The grief of the loss of a loving and healthy childhood. Thanks for writing this book.

Experiences with C-PTSD can be difficult to describe. Stephanie is an incredible journalist who was able to convey her experiences in an understandable way. Her vulnerability and transparency led to a beautiful read about her strength and resilience through a lifetime of trauma.

I DEVOURED this book. It’s incredibly well written and a fantastic story of healing, joy, nuance, and heartbreak. So wonderful. I’ll be using this in a class for training future therapists because it does such an excellent job of discussing the neuroscience, therapeutic and holistic approaches to healing.

This book was intense at time for a multitude of reasons. I feel like it is the perfect book to have read a week before my own EMDR journey. I could relate to so many things and it brought up things I haven't thought much about in decades. I will recommend this to so many people.

This is by far the best book that I've read about trauma and CPTSD. I could relate with Stephanie on everything she so marvelously described. I even recommend this book to my therapist. What an amazing book! I'll carry her words in my heart forever.

Amazing story. It can be triggering, so I was thankful for the spoiler alert of a happy ending.

I enjoyed this book so much! While there were many situations I couldn't relate to, there was a lot that I did, especially the long search for answers. Loved the ending. BADASS.

Stephanie Foo is a “ gift” with her first hand experience of the life my children and I have also been struggling to overcome. Her authentic, genuine and raw account of CPTSD and how to see the light in the darkness is a memoir I want to read again and again in hopes my children will gain wisdom from Stephanie’s powerful account of survival and success!!
