Abridged Audiobook
I really love this book. It is in my opinion to Steampunk genre writing what Howl's Moving Castle is to the animated form. If I had one criticism about Alfred Molina's narration, it would be that he didn't attempt any variation in terms of voice or accent in order to distinguish the characters in any meaningful way other than the Author's use of their name in the text. But in general - given the shift in lens from chapter to chapter - this doesn't bother me overmuch. And the richness of the world and story more than make up for this "issue". Still an immensely enjoyable experience regardless.
excellent story. very enjoyable just give yourself time to get into this world.
The premise of this book was good, but it just drug on & on. It could have been a much shorter book & would have been just a little bit more entertaining. I just kept listening to it because I wanted to see if there was (1) a point to the story and (2) some kind of redeeming conclusion that would make all the boring hours worth it. There wasn't - don't bother reading this one, unless you need to go to sleep
This could have been a great story, but there are just too many characters and a plot with needless side trips and diversions. The best thing about the book is the reader, who is a great actor in his own right with a marvelous voice. The listener can readily identify the 3 protagonists, but there are so many different "bad guys" that they keep getting in the way of one another, and the mystery of the whole "glass book" thing is never really explained. Just when you think the cd is going to "cut to the chase" another tangent is brought in and more confusion for the listener ensues. If it had not been for the excellent read by Mr. Malino I would have stopped listening after the 3rd disc.
