Summary
The acclaimed #1 New York Times bestseller from Stephen King. A uniquely frightening thriller about a young girl lost in the woods as night falls, with only the voice of her beloved Red Sox relief pitcher to sustain her and help her survive—maybe.

During a six-mile hike on the Maine–New Hampshire branch of the Appalachian Trail, nine-year-old Trisha McFarland escapes the tension between her older brother and recently divorced mother. But when she strays off the path, she descends into a terrifying nightmare. Alone in the deep forest, Trisha must face the raw power of nature, with only her imagination, courage, and wits.

Drawing strength from her Walkman, Trisha finds comfort in Red Sox broadcasts and the imagined companionship of her idol, relief pitcher Tom Gordon. As the signal fades, she conjures visions of Gordon guiding her, even as she senses a darker presence nearby.

One of my favorite books ever! I originally read it when it came out in 1999, I was 12 years old, but I stopped reading with a few chapters left. I have re-read it many time since then and still never finished it, I was scared for what would happen to Trisha at the end. This Audio version was actually extremely good and painted the picture of the story just as my own inner voice had. This is a GREAT book for young readers especially ones that would like to read Stephen King but aren't old enough for most of his work. I adore the fact that there isn't actual "pretend horror" for the most part, this story is about something else. Its about something that is inside all of us, a need to survive. Because it is from the view of a 9 year old girl dealing with a bickering family that has been separated and than is about her survival in the woods, it can be hard to get into at first. But if you take the time, this book can take you on a hard journey you will be hoping to survive, with a strong willed little girl you will never forget.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Completely different from King's normal style of writing. Surprisingly big spiritual parallels driving through the book. One is pressed to wonder if the heroines experience is psychological or supernatural. Anne Heche does a great job on the narration. Skeptical of her at first but very well done. One of my favorite King reads so far.

Don’t misinterpret my rating for all negativity. I fell in love with the aspect of this story. Girl gets lost in the woods, she fights for survival, something haunting is observing her from the distance. Yeah the book drawled me in. However it was dull and flat the first go round and shamefully predictable. This book really coulda been better. It had potential.. Definitely wouldn’t consider one of Stephan Kings best..

Was hopeful by for a good spooky listen but it was very boring and I didn’t enjoy the narrator .
