Excellent narrative on how the Bulgers had Boston in their pockets
This book is a real eye-opener. The author traces the corruption of Boston politics from the beginning of the 20th century. He concentrates on the doings of the 2 Bulger brothers, one a politician and the other a criminal. The local FBI, in their war against the Mafia, enlist the services of Whitey Bulger as an informant. His brother Billy Bulger embarks on a political career serving in the state senate. Whitey Bulger wields power in the Boston underworld by killing off his competitors or having the FBI dispatch them through the criminal justice system. His brother raises through Massachusett's state government and ultimately becomes president of the University of Massachusetts. Howie Carr spares no one in this account. Governor Dukakis and Senator Kerry come in for some scathing criticism as they chose to ignore the rampant corruption in state government.
