ON NOVEMBER 22, 1963, THREE SHOTS RANG OUT IN DALLAS, PRESIDENT KENNEDY DIED, AND THE WORLD CHANGED. WHAT IF YOU COULD CHANGE IT BACK?

In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King—who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer—takes readers on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

It begins with Jake Epping, a thirty-five-year-old English teacher in Lisbon Falls, Maine, who makes extra money teaching GED classes. He asks his students to write about an event that changed their lives, and one essay blows him away—a gruesome, harrowing story about the night more than fifty years ago when Harry Dunning’s father came home and killed his mother, his sister, and his brother with a sledgehammer. Reading the essay is a watershed moment for Jake, his life—like Harry’s, like America’s in 1963—turning on a dime. Not much later his friend Al, who owns the local diner, divulges a secret: his storeroom is a portal to the past, a particular day in 1958. And Al enlists Jake to take over the mission that has become his obsession—to prevent the Kennedy assassination.

So begins Jake’s new life as George Amberson, in a different world of Ike and JFK and Elvis, of big American cars and sock hops and cigarette smoke everywhere. From the dank little city of Derry, Maine (where there’s Dunning business to conduct), to the warmhearted small town of Jodie, Texas, where Jake falls dangerously in love, every turn is leading eventually, of course, to a troubled loner named Lee Harvey Oswald and to Dallas, where the past becomes heart-stoppingly suspenseful, and where history might not be history anymore. Time-travel has never been so believable. Or so terrifying.

A long book (my copy 25 discs, 30.75 hours) that, nevertheless, I found completely riveting. Mr. King just keeps on getting better. Narrator Craig Wasson was excellent, sounding like he was telling a story rather than reading. Definitely one of my favorites.

Entertaining book posing many interesting "what ifs" surrounding the assassination of JFK. The book has 2 shortfalls, in opinion:1) it is way too long and gets a bit repetitive/slow at several points; 2) the author tends to interject his own political views, which detract from the overall enjoyment.

Always glanced at this book in the bookstores but wasn't quite in the mood to travel back to the Kennedy era. Stumbled a upon it again on audio books and after a sample preview I was HOOKED! Narration was the bomb and the story line engaging. Would highly recommend to anyone who is thinking twice about it..you won't be sorry.

I stopped reading Stephen King a few years back -- don't really like horror, thrillers -- but this one intrigued me because of the subject. Loved it -- character development, the what if's -- & the history I lived thru as a teenager. Despite the length (25 discs) I wanted it to go on. King is an excellent story teller & I plan to go back to some of the previous titles I missed.

I'm surprised everyone has such positive reviews on this book. I am a fan of Stephen King and have read a handful of his books and normally enjoy them. It feels like there is about 10 hours in the middle of the book that could simply just be chopped out of the books altogether and I'm not sure anyone would notice. "The past always harmonizes with the future". Get used to hearing that line because the main character says this after everything he does. It's probably in the book somewhere between 50-100 different instances. I also found it strange that King kept referring to saving Kennedy as saving the world. It really did feel like he was trying to push is political agenda constantly referencing the negative in politics and how apparently if Kennedy were saved this would all be fixed. Narrator was solid. Easy to listen and follow although his Oswald sounds the same as the main character so you can get them mixed up in a couple of spots.

Fun to read, mostly, but it certainly felt a bit too stretched, like the author was a bit too fond of his own words multiplying.

Definitely one of the best SK novels!! The time travel was riveting, description of life in the late 50s and early 60s was surreal and the live story between George (Jake) and Sadie was beautiful! Although it was 31 hours, it felt like it went by fast!! I cried like a baby at the end. Get tissues!!

This was a really good listen. I like time travel and history together so it worked out really well for me. It is a long book but it is worth the long haul. If you have Hulu you can watch the show based on this book. It helps put a picture to a name while you read. The narrator was a little hard to get into at first but I ended up liking him in the end. It was overall a really good listen and I have and will recommend to anyone.

I've listened to most of Stephen Kings books. I started this one with some hesitation, fearing it would be too historical and dry. It was amazingly intriguing. I couldn't put it down. I loved the ending. I have to put this one in my top ten King novels. It was beyond expectations.

Excellent premise and fun "what if's." Thought it was too long and dragged along several times. Regardless, narrator was great and the part about the janitor's childhood experience at the beginning was one of the most powerful I'd ever heard.

What a remarkable story and how I feel the very presence on King's harmony as I read it this mid August, 2017. It leaves me with so much to think about and a new perspective on the past, certainly. The characters of George/Jake and Sadie were quite lovey and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, or listening to it rather. The details are impeccable Mr. King and I was dazzled by it, as an amateur writer myself I was impressed. Then hearing at the end you describe how you had a great deal of help with it I can certainly see how it came to be and it gives me a bit more faith in my own work. Before that I thought I'd better give it up! I smile, because I know I never could. I love to write and I would do it for that reason alone whether anyone ever read it or not. Thank you for this great work of art and the hours of enjoyment it brought. Best wishes, and congrats on that granddaughter. I myself became a 1st time grandmother to a beautiful little baby boy named Jackson exactly one month ago tomorrow 8/18/17. Lots~O~Love!!! SSHartman

I loved the perspective that Mr. King uses for this historic event that takes on a different look at the assignation of president Kennedy. He stepped outside the box and didn't make this book as much about the assassination and conspiracy theories as he looked at the whole what if? Many people over the years have stated that president Kennedy was one of the greatest presidents and would have done amazing things along with his brother Bobby, but you never hear anyone think about what president Kennedy may have done that would have changed what we take for granted everyday. I don't put a lot of belief that it would have turned out the way this book has shown it. I guess just as the assignation we will never know for sure.

I have to say that this has been my first audio book and with that being said I am floored with how compelling this book was. After the 30+ hours of listening I didnt want the story to end. I am the kind of person that gets distracted easily and looses focus on things just as easy, but this novel had me wishing there were more miles on my road trips to and from work to get further into the story. For such a long book it almost made it seem as if time itself stopped while immersing myself into the story. Steven King has yet to let me down since my virgin reading days of the early '90s. The thought of time travel always has intrigued my fast paced mind and this really allowed me to ask myself more tangible questions about the matter. All in all probably the most fascinating book I have yet to come across. Craig Wasson brought the novel to a whole new level. His narration was second to none, the ability to bring individual characters out from just one person takes talent I do not possess. Thank you again Mr. King for bringing more depth into my life. If you are reading this review and on the fence about listening to this novel please let me be the one to push you over the edge or, into the Rabbit Hole of adventure!!

Unlike many Stephen King horror books, I really liked the theme of this book and it certainly gives me plenty to think about as I often recognize history repeating itself in some ways. The book did get a bit slow in the second half. The editor could have taken out at least 5 hours, I think. I also could live without the explicit sexual descriptions. Thankfully there were not many. The narrator was excellent! And most likely made the content more compelling. All in all, well worth the listen.

Profile Avatar
Robin Steuernagel

In my opinion the book is at least 10 hours too long and extremely repetitive. That being said, I did listen all the way to the end so the content was engaging enough to keep me coming back. The narrator was good, but he came across older than the 35 year-old protagonist. I was also very irritated by his impression of southern women, particularly the character of Sadie, and I'm not southern. I think he did a good job with several of the other characters, but definitely not the female ones. It's a good listen, but not my favorite.

This novel was recommended to me by a friend. When I saw it was 30 hours long I couldn't help wondering what King would do to draw out this story. Instead, when the 30th hour came I wished it wouldn't end. Sadie and Jake become real for me and their story tugged at my heartstrings. I love how King intertwined fact and fiction to make an incredible tapestry. I absolutely loved this story from the very beginning to the very last moment.

I loved it. This was only my 2nd audiobook, so I don't have many to compare the narrator to, but I thought he did a great job. Stephen King, once again, wrote an excellent book. I only listened while commuting to work, but it had me turning it on as soon as I got in the car. I was anxious, yet sad to have it come to an end. I was born in 1970, so all of this was in my past, but I found myself looking up Oswald and his family online to read more about them, and to see what his wife looked like. I highly recommend this book!!

Let me begin by stating that I am not, nor have I ever been, a particularly strong fan of Stephen King. I have never doubted his writing skills and read a few of his earlier works, but they were largely not my cup of tea. It was with some reluctance that I finally decided to purchase and listen to 11.22.63. However, as a fan of alternative history fiction, my curiosity finally pushed me to take the literary plunge. From the moment I began this novel, I was completely and totally enthralled. The depth of the characterization, the descriptions of the era of the late 50's and early 60's were so vivid, it transported me back in time to remember my own youth. The characters were so well developed and tied so well into not only the story line, but to the historic events of that period, that I found myself lost in the visualizations brought to my minds eye. The voice characterizations were stellar and enhanced the experience beyond anything I expected. I found myself wishing this story would go on and on with alternative history trips by Mr. Epping to other points in time. Thank you to Mr. King for this experience. I recommend this audiobook to all.

I've only started reading/listening to books just this year and have mainly stuck to King's books for comforts sake. If you're a Stephen King fan and you haven't listened to this book yet...well what are you waiting for. If you're looking for a great little time travel story full of suspense as well as sweet heartwarming moments...then look no further. Great characters brought to life by Craig Wasson. Hated knowing that the story had to end eventually and I definitely missed the characters afterwards. I haven't read/listened to many books in my time but this easily is one of my favorites.

This is not the usual for Steven King. Historical fiction-si-fi, time travel, not horror. It held my interest, but was very long. Details of characters, towns, countryside, etc. took up many pages of reading. I would never have finished this book had it not been for Audio listening. Wasson's (narrator,) performance captured the moods, genders, & expressions of the characters.

The narrator, Wasson, did a magnificent job. The narration and engineering are so good that it is difficult for me to separate the quality of King's writing from the performance. As an audiobook, this book is the best of the art. I understand the complaint that the book is too long. I can't experience it again, for the first time, in written form, so I can't directly comment on how much work the book might be when read. I wouldn't shorten it a bit in audio format. I would have loved another 5 pages at the end. This is not a horror book. This book is adventure, suspense, endearing, ugly, romantic, and presented with an honesty that makes it incredibly infectious. The novel should be nominated for awards, and it should win in the audio format, in my ignorance of the competition :)

one of the best narrations I have ever heard, it was really neat to see King take on Time Travel, it was on par with Michael Crichton's Timeline.

I absolutely loved this story. It was both incredibly suspenseful (to the point of being stressful) and beautiful. I haven't read much of King's work but I will now. The protagonist was relatable and even likable. His relationships, especially his love interest were touching. The narrator is very, very good. The amount of feeling he puts into his reading is exceptional. The only gripe I might have about it is his representation of Sady. It bothered me a little but by no means ruined the immersion. All in all, this was an amazing listening experience.

Profile Avatar

agreed way too long. If pages 200 through 600 were cut in half, the overall story still would have held up and been so much more enjoyable. I love history, this book has a great premise and i'd give it a "good" if you make it to the end, but make sure you dont have anything else to read or anything more important to do once you hit the middle of the book. Like I said, loved the idea of the book, way different than most of SK stuff in some respects. Historica, sci-fi, love story, drama fiction, with plenty of catch you off guard Stephen King horror moments

An editor should've cut this book in half! I mean, a blow by blow description of a high school play and the students' performances? It felt like at least an hour. The narrator is atrocious - sounds like W.C. Fields as the FBI agent, his Russian accent sounds Austrian. What a massive disappointment
