Now a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!

From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining—an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is “[a] vivid frightscape” (The New York Times).

Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance’s sanity, as his paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook—and his father’s legacy of alcoholism and violence—kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep” by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone—who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining—the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan’s own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl’s soul and survival...

I absolutely loved it. It was a beautiful sequel to the shining. It also gave a heart wrenching and yet serene view of our last moments on this earth. It is rare to see such a work that can simultaneously have you smile, cry, laugh, and worry. It was almost comforting to see Doc grow up.

A bit challenging to track timelines at first, then it picked up half way through. cant wait to watch the movie on this to see how closely they follow the book.

As a fan of The Shining I was looking forward to this sequel. Be warned, if you are looking to feel the same thing The Shining made you feel, this is not the book for you. It feels like a completely different story that shares the same characters. It is a decent book to listen to, however and I do recommend it.

Great sequel to The Shining! Not nearly so horrific, but very compelling and spooky. It's good to finally know what happened to little Danny.

I really enjoyed this book. I was a fan of The Shining, so getting to find out what happened when Danny was all grown up was a lot of fun. I loved all the twists and turns and new characters this book had to offer, yet it still incorporated aspects of the original book. Full circle. Great book if you like the suspense and horror genre.

I loved this book! I finished it in 3 days. I bought the audio book for something to listen to at night before bed, to help me fall asleep. I picked the wrong book for that. It was narrated so beautifully that I stayed awake for hours just to find out what happened next. Great book. I'm so glad I bought it. I will have to read it a second time. I did have some trouble finding a connection with some of the characters but this book kept me attentive to want to find out more. Awesome story!

Great story of course - but Will Patton’s narration really took it to a new level! I was switching between the ebook and audiobook as I made my way through the novel, and Patton’s voice made the audio version an absolute thrill.

The book is so much better than the movie. I feel like the Outsider is one of the True-Not. I could be wrong, but I can see the connection.

I couldn't follow it at all. The 4th King audiobook in a row for me and enjoyed the previous three but really grew to dislike it. I'm sure the narrator is very talented but I couldn't take the voice any more.

didn't care for it. I enjoyed the shinning alot but this as a sequel didn't grab me. Will is a great actor and wonderful narrator in all books I've heard him do. I bet he could make my taxes sound exciting. hes the reason I even gave the book a 2 sorry Steve but not everyone likes all things by their idol.

I've completed this book twice now, once after completing the shining and then again before the film adaptation, and both times were enjoyable. The story is not as chilling as the Shining but rather a dark fantasy tale that resembles some of King's Dark Tower stories. As a King fan, I deeply enjoyed the book and felt it was a great send off for Danny. There were a few elements of the story that I could have done without as I felt they weren't completely vital to the story, but they when they were introduced, they weren't dwelled on for too long. The story is worth reading but the narration by Will Patton makes the audiobook an even more enjoyable experience.

From my youth, I have been a huge King fan but as my eyes had gotten worse and worse I had become discouraged from visiting my old friend. A while back I caught a preview for the Dr. Sleep movie. Now, I have always been a believer in "Read the book before you see the movie.". The problem is that even large print is getting hard for my eyes after long time periods and we all know King books take a moment to get through. When I discovered this app and its free preview I jumped at the chance to get reacquainted with my old friend and his creations. I was not disappointed. I was right back with Danny like it had been mere moments since I had left The Overlook instead of the decades that had actually passed. Thanks to Will Patton, I felt each character. All my subsequent listening choices will be based, not only on the author but also, on whether or not he is narrating. And yes, I will be seeing the movie as well.

first off ... Will Patton's narration is great ... the way he shifts gears between characters and situations really brings the story to life ... now the story ... I loved it , I found myself making time to listen to it , because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I particularly like DTs struggle with alcohol addiction and how he overcame it. cant wait for the movie to hit theaters , im definitely going to see it .

Decent read. Nice to get a sequel to the shining, although as times it seemed as though you knew what was going to happen. Narration got annoying real fast though, and it was hard at times to figure out if the narrator was speaking as a character or not because all his ranges sounded so similar. He sounded like Vincent Price when he narrates in the song Thriller by Michael Jackson. Needless to say after 15 hours of hearing that dreary voice, it was nice to be done with him. To be clear, the book was good- the narrator was annoying.

Thank you Mr. King for writing Doctor Sleep! The characters were vivid and alive ...even when they weren't! The story pulled me forward relentlessly. And Will Patton continues to amaze me with his talent as Narrator. He was absolutely flawless. I wish I could give him more than 5 stars.

I enjoy the majority of Stephen Kings work, but the series' that he has completed over the course of decades are unrivaled. Such a seamless transition between books and serves as a sort of time capsule that can't be replicated. I highly recommend listening to The Shining followed directly with Doctor Sleep.

Listen to the good book, The Shining, and then listen to the exceptional book, Doctor Sleep. Mr. King is masterful with his characters. His handling of the characters, good, evil, and in between, is brilliant. The recording was fantastic. My hat is off to King and Patton.

This was an excellent follow up to the shining. SK is still on the top of his game. It's great to see where that special little boy terrorized be the Overlook ends up. Will Patton, who does the narrating, is absolutely awesome. Patton does each character so well you forget it only you person reading.
